Here's what I've been thinking recently: Maybe big tech employees were never rewarded for their skills but for their complicity

(I have some friends who worked in big tech, and the spectacular inefficiency, waste and overprovisioning they've told me about made my eyes go wide, I had no idea people were being paid twice as much as me for doing a fraction of the work. It sounded wildly unsustainable then, and here we are.)

I have no direct insight, so this is pure gut feeling grounded in nothing but speculation, but ... big tech finally realized that they were over-employing and over-compensating developers and could downsize pretty massively without affecting productivity at all? The free ride is over, basically.

Been hosting a lot of guests in the last months, and filthy casuals just don't fucking know how to use Lush products. I will show them the bottles and say "you need way less of this than you think" and yet, AND YET! two showers later the whole fucking bottle of Honey I Washed The Kids is just gone.

(Also suspect it doesn't help that developers have become primadonnaized by earning massive salaries for doing not particularly difficult work not held to particularly high standards, resulting in a culture where people think they're being paid for their exotic skills and not for their complicity)

Things were actually better 20 years ago. Don't think it's because the bigcos of 20 years ago were any better than today, but because the big book of how to thoroughly exploit the customers of your digital and online business just hadn't been written yet, and now we're on the like fifth edition

Hmmmm, do course leaders literally whore out their students to corporations these days? I remember some course leaders trying to foist nubile young flesh on me just before I left London, but that had a certain "we don't know what the fuck we are doing but have a fledgling developer lol" air to it.

Yeah, but that's studios, I'm thinking like how literary agents represent authors or indeed CAA represents musicians and actors. I did actually talk to CAA way back in the day when they were trying to represent rockstar game developers, but I have no idea whether they are still trying to do that.

Why aren't there talent agencies for game developers? Or are there, and I just don't know because I'm not talented enough for any of them to want to represent me?

I'd love to see all the landed gentry try to leave, and slowly but surely drinking their milkshake up would probably be the best thing to happen to England for about 959 years

(And isn't part of the problem that the rich have managed to rope the have-nots into the mechanisms of their wealth, so that taxing capital gains etc will also affect regular people's pension saving, buying and selling property, blah-blah, so that taxing the rich also bones the middle-class?)

Curious how what he says is controversial at all. Is England full of randos who are like "think of the rich people!!" or is it the classic "oh no but what if the rich people all leave???" thing, and honestly, I gotta say that I think living in Dubai or whatever is fitting punishment for being rich.

"AI" is the crystallization of a cultural trend where the administration of a business is seen as its true concern, while the product or service rendered by the business is just a byproduct. It promises pure administration without contradictions, pure organizational structure: Organs without a body.

The idea of reading something "written for me" feels kind of icky, like the leap of faith involved in exploring someone else's literary mind is part of the point. Getting a work tailored to my liking and "knowing that it is tailored" would be a turn-off for me.

Hm, my whole "mode" of appreciating literature is "you have written all this, so you must have something to tell me" on top of "I don't really, really care that much about story, I care about reading, enjoying and interpreting the highly structured train of thought presented in this literary work".

Microdosing acid and other psychedelics and hallucinogens is just missing the point so fucking hard I can't even. You must allow it to fuck your brain, the drugs must go balls deep or beyond. When you have ascertained you can handle a certain dosage, you must increase it. The way out is through!

Reminds me of the time I caught a bunch of nouveau riche HackerNews commenters discussing how they ordered bespoke genre fiction from authors. They'd provide a spec, and then they'd get their custom-written sci-fi story or whatever a few months later. My mind never stopped boggling since.
