Something one hears from certain Baltimore electeds but less so from everyday people is “Baltimore is a city of neighborhoods”. Revealing and telling.

Cities, generally, can’t override the dominant information environment, only respond. As such, the response has to be a genuine crackdown on disorder far above and beyond what is sufficient in suburbs, as well as being genuinely safer, often by an order of magnitude or more.

Yes, people who have the capacity and capability should always analyze through objective statistical reality, but the fact of the matter is, most people cannot, and the information environment is simply not geared towards actual education on crime and objective analysis of risk and safety.

It’s called the affect heuristic, a well-studied and replicated idea (also media concentration in urban cores, but that’s another story). Cities just have to be far more ordered and objectively safer than suburbs to reach an equivalent level of perceived safety. It’s unfair, but it’s psychology.

Honestly I feel like urbanists need to realize that if it's all vibes we just need to improve vibes. Make sure any broken windows get cleaned up quickly, it's way cheaper than actually trying to prevent windows from being broken

I have no beef with DC, I love it and I’m so happy that they have all those resources and institutions. Every city deserves those resources though, and Maryland can and should do the same for Baltimore as what DC has been blessed with, as well as Baltimore electeds and boosters step up big time.

Idk as a downtown resident and pedestrian I would very much appreciate it if drivers would not use my neighborhood as a pass through. the infrastructure being so car-dominated certainly doesn’t help either.
