Another successful distro! Today we got to cook out of our new industrial kitchen and it was such a treat! More vegan split pea curry today, so many donuts from Donut Run, and many meals from Vegetable & Butcher.

Another successful share! We had split pea curry, many vegan meals from Vegetable & Butcher, vegan donuts from Donut Run, water bottles, produce, and winter survival essentials.

Next week, we'll be cooking out of an industrial kitchen again and we can't wait!

If you are thinking of starting a mutual aid project but are dedicated to serving animal products, please consider naming your project something other than Food Not Bombs. "Punk Picnic" or "(your city) Mutual Aid" are good options!

Being consistently vegan/vegetarian may seem restrictive, but in reality it expands the options in a community.

Many people who refrain from meats for religious reasons may not be accommodated by meat based meals. Also while vegan food can have common allergens (nut, wheat, soy, etc) it omits shellfish, dairy, and egg which are 3 of the top 9 allergens.

Another important reason for keeping all FNB vegan or vegetarian is that many people seeking free meals are familiar with FNB and expect our food to be meat-free at the very least. It's important to provide this option, when it's so hard to find elsewhere.

These effects then also contribute to people having to become refugees, economic instability, rising fascism, and war. Food Not Bombs unequivocally stands against all of these things because of our commitment to nonviolence, so we stand against industrial animal agriculture as well.

The first principle, serving vegan/vegetarian food, is important for several reasons. Industrial animal agriculture directly contributes to deforestation, desertification, mass extinction, seizure of indigenous land, climate change, workers' rights abuses, and infectious disease pandemics.

While each FNB chapter is indeed autonomous, we ascribe to these principles laid out for us since the beginning of FNB.

THE THREE PRINCIPLES OF FOOD NOT BOMBS ONE - ALWAYS VEGAN OR VEGETARIAN AND FREE TO EVERYONE Our food is vegan or vegetarian and free to anyone without restriction, rich or poor, stoned or sober. First, the potential for problems with food spoilage are greatly reduced when dealing strictly with plant based foods. Second, we want our food to reflect our dedication to nonviolence and that included violence against all beings including animals. We only prepare food which is strictly from plant sources so people will always know and trust Food Not Bombs that our food is safe and nonviolent. At times, we do get donations of dairy and meat products which might and redirect it to soup kitchens that aren't vegetarian because we believe eating is more important than being politically pure; however, we NEVER cook with animal products ourselves and only share breads that might have dairy when it is not possible to know for sure. TWO - EACH CHAPTER IS INDEPENDENT AND AUTONOMOUS AND MAKES DECISIONS USING THE CONSENSUS PROCESS Each Food Not Bombs chapter is autonomous and uses a process of consensus to make decisions. There are no leaders, presidents or directors, and no headquarters. Everyone in each chapter is encouraged to participate in the decision making including those who depend on Food Not Bombs for their meals. Your chapter may meet once a week or once a month but no one volunteer is empowered to tell the rest of the group how it is to operate and there is no headquarters to direct the activities of any chapter. The process of consensus is not voting or the use of "Robert's Rules of Order" where a majority determine the decisions. In consensus a decisions is not made until the proposal is one that everyone participating supports and can feel good giving their consent. There are a number of resources to help your chapter learn to use consensus on the web and you can also request support from volunteers who have been active in other Food Not Bombs groups. a very large pot of curry soup sits on a stovetop, with many vegetables and split peas. next to the pot of soup is another, smaller pot filled with cauliflower, not yet cooked. on the other side is a counter with a full spice rack.

Come get yr soup! All winter, we're serving up the soup Saturdays in McPherson Square in DC at 2:30pm.
We also have prepped vegan meals from Vegetable & Butcher and when we're lucky, vegan donuts from Donut Run.
