Had a small network hiccup with Sill. Should be back up and running. Backfilling all accounts now (though only missing ~20 min of data, shouldn't take long)

04.08.2025 18:45 β π 2 π 1 π¬ 1 π 0Hey thanks for writing about @sill.social, @nevillehobson.xyz! www.nevillehobson.io/cutting-thro...
You mention wanting support for other federated networks. What else are you using that you would want to see in Sill?
Quick demo on the use case for more link data in @sill.social. Browse by publication, author, and topic, and see all the links in the history of your network, plus what your network said.
This is only working locally right now, still need to figure out production scale. Probably some DuckDB.
The Sill filters UI, which offers: - a search bar - a minimum shares input - a sort by select input - a time range input - a reposts filter - a service select input - a list select input
Working on a rework of filters in @sill.social. Changes:
1. New "minimum shares" filter. Really useful in conjunction with sorting by new.
2. Grid layout to make more efficient use of space.
3. Filter state is saved to local storage, so when you return, Sill remembers your filter state.
Want your own custom notification feed? Head to sill.social/notifications to get started. You can set up all kinds of filters: all links from specific domains, keyword matching, share thresholds, and more. Available via email or RSS.
29.05.2025 15:50 β π 1 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0And a secret weapon: Sillβalthough its usefulness is a function of how many smart people one follows on Bluesky. Here's a snapshot of your Square columnist's Sill alerts yesterday morning. The screenshot shows over a dozen emails from Sill in a 4-hour period, all links about Chicago.
@charliemeyerson.com talked about how he gets his news for @chicagopublicsquare.com.
I'm pretty confident Charlie is @sill.social's #1 user. He has a custom notification feed that sends him an email anytime someone he follows posts a link about Chicago.

Playing around with an (optional) even denser compact layout in @sill.social. Thoughts?
08.05.2025 14:58 β π 1 π 1 π¬ 3 π 1A screenshot of a Sill notification group for a notification called "Basketball links". It is delivered via RSS and has two filters, one on the list name, which should equal "Basketball", and the number of shares, which is greater than or equal to two.
Added a quick new feature to @sill.social today. You can now set up custom notifications based on lists/feeds. So, for example, I now have an RSS feed that updates whenever 2+ people share the same link in my basketball list.
Notifications are a powerful way to make social media work on your time.

@sill.social now has bookmarks! In your links feed, every link has a bookmark button in the toolbar. Click it to add the link to your bookmarks. You can find all of your bookmarks at sill.social/bookmarks, or by using the nav.
Sill will continue to track shares to bookmarked links beyond 24 hours.

I also added archives for your Daily Digest, so you can go back in time and see what was most popular on a previous day. sill.social/digest/archive.
the only thing that is allowing me to keep up with the news is @sill.social. I can't recommend it enough.
22.03.2025 19:39 β π 2 π 2 π¬ 0 π 0Assuming Northsky supports Atproto's OAuth spec, @sill.social should work with Northsky accounts when it opens. If anyone is on Northsky and wants to try out Sill, let me know if it works. Eager to support this project.
18.03.2025 01:11 β π 8 π 1 π¬ 1 π 0Are you new to Bluesky and looking for a way to streamline your news consumption? Try sill.social! It collects the links people you follow post and sorts them by popularity. Less doomscrolling, more reading. Available via web, email, or RSS.

Working on some new Sill features. I've been super interested in a more analytical view of your network. What would help you better understand the news diet you're getting from social media?
(I don't even follow that many NYT/WaPo journalists... y'all gotta post some other sources)
If and when Mastodon implements quote posts, Sill will support them as first-class objects the same way it does for Bluesky. blog.joinmastodon.org/2025/02/brin...
16.02.2025 22:20 β π 9 π 2 π¬ 0 π 0Since migrating sill.social to a new host last week, I've had the most stable week of operating Sill in its history. I suspect the hard drive on the previous server was slowly failing for a long time.
Anyway, now's a great time to sign up for Sill!
Weekday crew! Sill is back!

08.02.2025 15:33 β π 4 π 2 π¬ 1 π 0sill.social is back! Unfortunately, I could not save the database. That means you'll need to recreate your account in order to use Sill. I'm really sorry for the downtime and inconvenience.
08.02.2025 15:33 β π 34 π 7 π¬ 8 π 5Posting this to hold myself accountable.
Sill will relaunch tomorrow morning, with or without recovered data.
I have a process that removes corrupted data from my backup, but it is quite slow. I'm going to let it run overnight and see what happens. If it's not done or close, I launch anyway.
Basically where I'm at is to either:
- Attempt to recover my offsite backup (which is a little old) and recover most user accounts
- Just launch Sill on the new server I've provisioned (with a new provider), make everyone sign up again.
Obviously option 1 is preferable!
The production failure was hardware failure at Latitude. Nothing I can do about it. That's why we backup offsite. But I made a mistake: I exported a pg_dump file through `docker exec -it`, which corrupts the binary format. But I can see the data, I just have to get it in a workable format. Ideas?
