In computing I saw a similar mindset. DoE panicked when Japan built the Earth Simulator and then poured money into supercomputing but focused on exascale when there was so much low hanging fruit with purpose-built machines.

I remember many were flabbergasted when SLAC and BBar were terminated, and when BTeV at FNAL was stopped. It seemed like DoE was going for a home run at the highest energies, when real tensions in the Standard Model needed B- and C-factories to try to resolve. Oh well.

And yes, many of the particle physicists I worked with at Fermilab switched over to the various particle astrophysics projects. Working remotely on LHC experiments isn’t easy, and the field prioritized the energy frontier. Many mysteries remain in the intensity frontier.

One of my friends at FNAL commented that party life improved once he started working on CDMS. High energy physics isn’t captivating to many non-scientists, but astrophysics definitely is.

I agree that particle physics is viewed as more prestigious, but condensed matter / materials science has touched human lives more deeply. E.g., the economic revolution from semiconductor physics.

Retired experimental condensed matter physicist here, who worked on superconductivity as a grad student (incl. the year of High Tc), 7 years in optoelectronics, then 21 years at Fermilab (computing division) including 15 years on the CDMS dark matter search.

I do miss the years when Frazer Smith did simulcast coverage on KLOS radio (and a few others).
