When Galileo made his telescope, the first thing he pointed it at was a faint patch of light which clearly wasn't a planet or a star.
It turned out to be the Beehive Star Cluster. A group of a 1000 stars gravitationally bound together, roughly 550 lightyears from Earth.

If you know where to look, you can see the M42 Great Orion Nebula with the naked eye. It will look like a tiny smudgy star in the middle of Orion's sword.
I love the dramatic layered strands of bright and dark nebula.
