It costs just $33/MWh to transform daytime solar into dispatchable solar
Huge since true.
"It costs just $33/MWh to transform daytime solar into dispatchable solar"
And no, that doesn't yet account for that storied Dunkelflaute. Then again, the typical gas LCOE doesn't account for Putin's whims or other geopolitical vagaries.

Taxshift laat stroomfactuur dalen met 42 euro per jaar, die van gas wordt 78 euro duurder
De cijfers voor de taxshift van elektriciteit naar gas liggen vast. Wie op gas verwarmt, zal meer betalen.
Meanwhile, in Belgium #2
Government decided on tax shift electricity (-11,4cβ¬/kWh) to fossil gas (+ 4,38cβ¬/kWh) and heating oil.
Combined with ETS2 and Flemish region tax shift, this supports electrification towards 2030.

OKAY BIG ONE FOR YA
NEW report out today: I dig deep into how big tech has been muddling tech types and overstating evidence to claim "AI" will make global emissions drop like a stone....
Not only will it not, it seems to be verifiably doing the opposite!!

graph from Ember EU electricity review with battery pipelines in different countries
My favorite graph from the brand new EU Electricity Review by @ember-energy.org ππ‘
It shows new battery storage capacity is coming, especially to the countries that need it to integrate their solar and wind.
Good for consumers, and sign that market signals work.

If you think gas power is cheap, meet Keadby 2, the last CCGT gas plant built in Great Britain
It opened in 2023, after 5yrs of development, at a cost of Β£350m
Owner SSE says it would now cost 3.5x to build the same plant (~Β£1.2bn)

graph for week of 5 to 9 January 2026 in Belgium, with a red line showing CO2 intensity of grid power, and hourly CO2 emissions from heat pump in light grey and gas boiler in dark grey. Heat pumps is always less. Text box says heat pump saved 81 kg of CO2 emissions.
Does heat pump still save CO2 in a cold and snowy Belgian week, with record fossil gas power generation? Turns out it does. ππ‘

Lijkt me eerder een

In all hours heat pump delivers CO2 savings. At end of the week wind picked up with storm Goretti passing - and temps also increased.
We have green power supply at home, but for this exercise I used general Belgian mix data. It's the hourly matching part of this exercise I find interesting.

I matched hourly heating and domestic hot water production and corresponding electricity use, with hourly CO2 emission intensity from the Belgian grid. Then compared that to hourly CO2 emissions if the same heating energy would have been generated with a fossil gas condensing boiler.
