As I continue to put the finishing touches on the new album (yeah, I know it's now weeks late), it becomes more and more obvious that it will need to be released with a warning label stating: "Clearly written and mixed by a bass player." 😁

5 songs into the new album mastering & I realized I totally forgot to record a vocal part I wanted to do months ago. D'oh.
Out comes the #Copperphone! I just plugged it straight into the RME's preamp instead of my usual vox rig & plunked it on my desk. Git 'er done.
(yeah, my desk is a mess)

Dear Instagram: it doesn't matter how many times you keep shoving sped-up videos of people sanding wood or joining pipes together into my feed and calling it "so satisfying", I still won't give a flying fuck.

I don't care what anyone says about analog hiss adding "mojo" or any other vague intangible...I'm getting rid of that shit from my bass tracks, dammit. 😁

Dream last night: I was getting ready to sit in on guitar with a band I didn't know, playing a song I've never played guitar on (Tom Petty's "I Need To Know", which I've only played live on bass) & replacing a guy who also showed up to play & was clearly pissed off about what was happening. Weird.

Question: does anyone actually download albums they get online, & if so-do they read any inserts (say, in PDF format w/lyrics, etc) that might be included? I've always put the effort into them; kind of a throwback to the old days of album gatefolds, I guess. Worth it? Or am I just jerking off...?

Virtual bass recording rig using an Eden amp plugin and a clone plugin of the SansAmp BDDI.

Interesting technical ironies: my live bass rig centers around my Eden amp that I've had for a very long time, with a SansAmp BDDI hitting the front of it. And now I'm basically (ha! Geddit?) using a virtual version of that for some of my recorded bass tracks. 😀

The Slate VSX rig has been wonderful for virtual versions of both the car & phone test for me. The phone one is great for hearing if vocals are sitting too loudly, and the car for zeroing in on boomy bowel-rattling lows. After all that: if it then still works in my Honda Civic, I'm golden. 😆

One of the things I've learned the hard way about mixing is: after a certain point in the evening, I can no longer trust either my ears or my brain to be accurate & use rational thought processes anymore, so I must walk away & call it a night. Otherwise: wake up to "what the fuck was I thinking?"🤣

Whilst mixing during my week off, trying to make sure I enforce my self-imposed "stop & give your ears a break at least every 30 minutes" rule, to try to keep ear fatigue in check. There's nothing like losing all your top end, overcompensating, and the next day listening to a tin can full of bees. 😬
