Visited Sleepy Hollow today. Spending tomorrow in Providence, RI and seeing the Lovecraft sites and whatever else there is time for. Hoping the rain lets up!

Hopefully, in so doing, we avoid falling to similar darkness.

For those, and I like to count myself among them, it is instructive to examine the ways in which language is used to explicate and effect such systems in order to survive and resist them, while using those tools to deconstruct them for our own ends.

The other faction, I think, recognizes in those dark, cosmic forces a mirror of our own lived reality and are, like so many Lovecraftian protagonists, threatened with madness at the contemplation of grand forces arrayed against them, both directly and with a sickening indifference.

And then, of course, should the relationship deepen, well, then perhaps they become more - tools for maintaining the status quo, or for assisting in the return to a more preferable one.

Inevitably, they delude themselves, imagining the momentary conviviality as something more than idle curiosity at the irony personified by a well-read black man who shares their own politics, rendered then into the classic role black men play in our culture - the evening's entertainment.

The kind who feel themselves isolated within their own demographic, and perhaps an exception to the rules, or moving goalposts, of the author's prejudice. Perhaps they imagine sharing conversation with him or others like him and fixing their minds, or worse, sharing their sentiments.

I'm reading Lovecraft again. Thanks for that, Mr. LaValle. Naturally, I find myself examining what this says about me as a black man. In my, admittedly limited, experience of other black people reading Lovecraft, I've rendered us down to two factions. On one hand, we have what I call the Clarences.
