Male great spotted woodpecker perched on a mossy tree stump viewed from behind. Most of the photo is deep black shadow, but the woodpecker is looking up towards a patch of sunlight at the top left. The red patch on the back of its neck and its red rump stand out in the photo as well as the black and white patterning.

Returning to the dark theme for #WoodpeckerWednesday, I think this great spotted woodpecker was as surprised at that patch of sunlight as I was!
I don't usually want distracting patches of light in the background of a photo, but I think this works?

Brown hare lying in short frosty grass with its eyes shut. Its head is slightly raised from the ground and its ears are slightly raised from its back.

This brown hare was having none of this mad march hare business on a cold frosty morning yesterday. During an hour and a half it did open its eyes and move its ears once or twice, but when the sun came up it lowered its head, flattened its ears, and the excitement was over 🤣

A little egret stands side-on in bright sunlight, its pure white plumage glowing against a dark blue water background. The bird’s long black bill points forward and its pale yellow eye is sharp and very alert. Fine, delicate feathers cascade down its back, and thin black legs are partly hidden among green grass at the water’s edge.

The trees that are awaiting Spring’s touch of greenery are transparently duplicated in the morning calm of the river. Through them the hills are seen along with the blues of the morning sky.

You can see the canal, which reflects the cloudy sky and trees standing on the left bank. People are walking along the bank and further back you can see some of the town's houses. The canal narrows and there are also people walking. A bridge connects both sides.
