“It feels as though the government is trying everything they can to push these patriots out onto the streets with as few benefits and as little recourse as possible,” said Emily Starbuck Gerson, the comms director at SPARTA Pride.

Ireland is stuck in limbo on administrative leave. He can't work or look for a new job. He doesn’t know when he’ll leave the military since his December separation date has been cancelled.

“I can’t set myself up on the outside," he said. "it’s very difficult to land on my two feet as a civilian."

After being approved for TERA, Ireland thought about what he wanted his civilian life to look like. He planned a retirement ceremony for Nov 14., inviting his wife, parents, and other trans troops on his Hawaii base.

In Aug, the Air Force revoked TERA and Ireland had to cancel the ceremony.

Ireland was in a unique position unlike most trans troops who were being forced out without longterm benefits.

With 15 years of service, the Air Force told Ireland he was eligible for Temporary Early Retirement Authority, which gives veterans access to pensions and lifetime healthcare.

“This is the tip of the spear. [Trump admin] knows if they can get away with treating people who have served our country in this way, they can mistreat transgender people with impunity in other areas,” Shannon Minter, an attorney with NCLR said.

Ireland is one of 17 service members suing the US for what they say is an “unlawful” revocation of their retirement benefits and pensions. Trans service members and lawyers say the admin's move is unprecedented and raises questions about how far Trump will go to reshape the armed forces.
