I do know people who are moving back to NY though because the grass wasn’t greener in the “lower cost of living states” like they thought it would be once everything is factored in. I could write a book based on rural/rust belt culture economics and why and how we got here but it isn’t as straight forward as people assume. Also, people vote against their own interests all the time. Sadly.

Upstate (rural) has been voting Republican for a very long time, not just because Trump was on the ticket. There are several counties that feel like living in an alternate universe, I know because I live in one.
