β€œBut talking about my daughter feels like the most important thing I can do. She mattered because she was here and she was exceptional.”

What a beautiful and heartbreaking and important piece of writing this is.

This is a new image from #JWST.

Everything. Else. Is. A. Galaxy.

This is so beautifully written and so completely true and I agree wholeheartedly with all of it 🫢🏼

🧡 I want to tell you why I think this is one of the most important prizes running and I’m sorry that the book press and mainstream publishing hasn’t dived on it with bells on and support …

Yes! For me, at least, making publishing the goal changes the purpose - I rarely get to do things just because I want to, and this offers a way to practice and learn without the focus being on β€˜the outcome’. Also, doesn’t rule out publishing for anyone who then wants to explore it later.

Strongly resonates with me. I finished my MSc in 2021 and any writing I have done since has been work related - even when unpaid, I somehow legitimise this whereas I struggle to do so with personal writing.

Ooh, do you use cashews? I’m off to gather some of our stuff today and I usually use pine nuts but would be very interested to know what cashews do!

9 small freezer bags with pieces of damp folded kitchen towel wrapped around chilli seeds, all labelled in marker pen according to the seeds are sitting on a kitchen worktop. Each one is a different variety - there is a bag each of Centi, Aji, Pink Tiger, Orange Habanero, Habareaper, Kashmiri, Curry, Jamaican Yellow and Tequila (a sweet pepper).

I was invited to contribute to an academic text 5 yrs ago, so I said my piece in a publication that I thought was high quality and written for a professional readership (in hopes of going beyond the echo chamber). And I kind of retired after that. 20+ years of no change is evidence enough.

Genuinely think no caregiver at the start of their β€˜journey’ wants to believe it can be as awful as more experienced caregivers tell them. I think professionals (including thinkers in that) have a variety of different reasons for what they choose to get on board with.

Sadly, I’m even more cynical (if that’s possible). I tend not to comment on any Education related topic because I don’t see there’s much point, but I think your comment could too easily be overlooked when, in fact, it exemplifies the whole miserable state of things.

The most horrible thing about that Jarlath, is that it’s not remotely surprising.

Infuriating that we are still saying the same things over a decade on.

On the left of the image is a normal X chromosome the extremities of which are smooth. To the right is a Fragile X chromosome showing the fragile sites on the bottom two branches of the X. They are constricted and look as if someone has tied a tight rubber band around them.

For #RareDiseaseDay, here's a series of posts I wrote a while ago about how #FragileX Syndrome affects our family.

#FragileX is a chromosomal abnormality & is the most common form of inherited learning disability. It's called Fragile X as the end of the chromosome looks like it's about to drop off.

Mother had carer’s allowance stopped while with disabled daughter in hospital Rachel Adam-Smith says stopping benefits when loved ones are in hospital fails to recognise carers’ ongoing role

As well as showing deep systemic failures, this piece is so devastating and terrifying to me as the parent and full time carer for an adult child with epilepsy.
The sheer lack of understanding outside of specialist services is truly unacceptable.
What a heartbreaking and needless loss of life.
