New article in Nature describes a field experiment on X which shows that assigning users to an algorithmic feed pushes conservative content and demotes mainstream news.

Sounds obvious but important in light of prior claims algorithms don't cause attitudinal changes.

The horror stories rolling in from Minnesota are just the tip of the iceberg. This 20-year-old, who's lawfully present in the country, was arrested for being Latino, then jailed in a filthy cell where he couldn't even sit down. 18 days of illegal detention. democracyforward.org/wp-content/u...

NEW from us: Rapid expansion of the EV, wind, solar and other clean energy industries drove more than a third of China's GDP growth in 2025, and almost all of the growth in investment, making clean energy essential to meeting economic targets.

Oh yes, we wrote about that in 2019, then there was COVID, then Ukraine, then we thought the end of gas was around the corner. No.

Gas will probably keep putting upward pressure on emissions in the years ahead, even if coal tanks: rdcu.be/bYf1O

It is January, so there are still 12 months in the year & anything could basically happen. So take this projection with a grain of salt.

The interesting takeaway is that coal is expected to decline, gas growing strongly, & oil spluttering up.

Gas growing strongly is something to worry about.

Kv-kollega otti taannoin yhteyttä. Ajatteli Metsähallitusta keissinä valtiollisesta instituutiosta, jolla suojellaan luontoa ja metsien biodiversiteettiä. Uniikkia maailmassa! Vastasin, että tilanne ei ehkä ole noin ruusuinen ja ohjasin tarkentavien tietolähteiden äärelle. Tuli mieleen 👇

Suomen valtio on aikeissa hakata kymmeniä, valtion omistamia luonnonmetsiä ympäri maata.

Syynä on hallituksen satumetsäkriteeri, jonka mukaan mikään metsä ei ole kyllin arvokas säilytettäväksi maassamme.

Luonto ei vain häviä passiivisesti, vaan on aktiivisen tuhonnan kohteena.

North Carolina weighs investigating ‘presumptive noncitizens’ in latest attack on voting Republicans took control of the board last year, installing a GOP majority and immediately replacing the long-time, nonpartisan director with a party political operative.

In an alarming development, North Carolina’s GOP-led election board is considering labeling certain voters as “presumptive noncitizens,” potentially purging them from the rolls. It's the latest move in a nationwide effort to politicize voter list maintenance and undermine confidence in the election.

New from us: EU CO2 emissions fell only 0.8% in 2025, the second year in a row that the bloc has fallen short of its targets. Adverse weather played a big role but underlying issues are slow progress on transport and buildings electrification and wind power buildout.

This is one of the things that I find is most shocking to people outside Minnesota who don’t realize it yet—the scale at which everyone who isn’t white has been forced into a spectrum of hiding.

Very good article drawing out the Tahrir Square comparison.

Coal power generation falls in China and India for first time since 1970s ‘Historic’ moment in biggest coal-consuming countries could bring decline in global emissions, analysis says

This is huge: For the first time since the early 1970s, coal power generation has fallen in both China & India.

It undercuts claims that decarbonisation is pointless while they expand coal. Renewables are no longer just adding capacity — they’re displacing coal.
