Sidney was a genius, though he could be hurtful and gratuitously rude in his remarks. Using C. Elegant as a model system was brilliant.

06.10.2025 00:24 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I recall Sidney Brenner visiting the Cambridge Genetics Department in 1967/68?on the Mill Road, and telling my Part2 class (9 men and me) that he was going to use this small worm to understand neural development. Fabulous progress from an idea to half a century of achievement.

29.07.2025 15:26 β π 1 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0There are a few things that we should be more careful to keep clean eg kitchen chopping boards, taps and toothbrushes but we do need to exercise our immune system to keep it in top responsive mode.
17.07.2025 10:00 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0About to enjoy second day @royalsociety.org meeting on βThe future of scientific publishingβ. Lots of interesting concepts and problems as well as good progress. Just hearing how important preprints were for scientific progress on COVID during pandemic. But reader knowledge and vigilance critical
15.07.2025 08:39 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0@bbcnews-world-rss.bsky.social They do a lot of cringey ads for their programmes, where their correspondents self-congratulate in a most offputting way.
11.07.2025 22:10 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0There are always links. I like to think about the science behind domestic management generally, but this came from @laurencepearl.bsky.social. And @professor-dave.bsky.social is always bringing such links to us too

05.07.2025 13:02 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Yes, an X-linked anomaly more frequent around the Mediterranean. Men more severely affected since women usually have one normal copy of the gene so half their red cells are normal. Raw beans worse. other legumes and some antibiotics and stress can also trigger the haemolytic anaemia.

As a bioscientist I wholeheartedly support this plea to maintain and promote ancient diversity. We need it for survival as climate change takes hold
04.07.2025 09:34 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Loved the Quantum Jungle and the schools exhibits: both so hugely important for the nationβs future. We must maintain strong support for young people, and technological advances, many of which will become commercially important. We must invest properly to secure these assets for the UK

I have a lovely lovage soup recipe but no lovage since we moved from Edinburgh. It is too rampant for small London garden. After touching the leaves your hands smell of mild fragrant curry. Have read that it is secret ingredient of Knorr cubes
17.05.2025 10:32 β π 2 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0It is wonderful to see the successes and achievements of Royal Society funding recipients. One of their major contributions is the training of subsequent generations of scientists, but they continue to make huge contributions to science and society many decades after support by @royalsociety.org
