25 years of British offshore wind | Ember
Celebrating 25 years of offshore wind delivering clean power and bringing jobs, skills and local manufacturing to Britain’s coastline.
Monday marked 25 years since the UK’s first offshore wind farm, Blyth Offshore Wind Farm, began to generate clean power!
In a single generation, offshore wind has become the UK’s biggest source of clean power, providing over 34% of all renewable electricity in 2024.

Yesterday's new EU grids package proposal supports smoother connection processes and takes steps to ensure more people can share in the benefits of cheap, clean, homegrown energy... but an electricity grid ruled by industry under weak oversight won't guarantee public and climate interest.

Mallorca’s Alcudia coal plant just filed for closure in 2026, meaning every remaining coal plant in 🇪🇸 has now applied to shut down.
What's left? The govt dotting a few i’s and crossing some t’s.
Spain could end coal today… if someone picked up a pen.

Coal phase-out policies could slow population decline in Germany's mining regions – analysis
Europe’s coal phaseout is inevitable, but policymakers can’t step back now.
Investment in German coal regions 🇩🇪 shows just transition policies can slow depopulation and attract new jobs.
The EU must keep supporting national transitions beyond coal.

A renewables-based energy system will save Europe €1.6 trillion
Renewables are the cheapest form of power generation. But this doesn’t tell the full story. What about the costs of grids, storage and back-up ? WindEurope’s latest study done in cooperation with Hita...
Back in 2000 the share of wind and solar in Europe’s electricity was a combined 0.8%.
Today it's at 30%, and the economy has grown by 45%.
In fact, a renewables-based energy system will save 🇪🇺 €1.6 trillion, finds new @windeurope.bsky.social study.

UK ministers warned of ‘emerging risk’ to gas supply
Britain will hit a gas crisis if a long cold spell coincides with a loss of key infrastructure, advisers say.
The UK Budget promised lower energy bills, but also scrapped an energy poverty scheme while the UK's gas-security risk grows.
The answer isn’t more imported LNG.
It’s homegrown wind, solar, storage, and a modern grid.
Renewables can protect 🇬🇧 households.

Spain reached a historic milestone this summer: between 3 July - 16 September, the its power system operated entirely without coal.
With coal accounting for < 1% of 🇪🇸's electricity generation this year, it’s on the brink of completing a full coal phase-out.

#COP30 failed to take a clear stance against fossil fuels, even as floods, droughts & heatwaves across the world intensify.
But momentum won't wait for a few oil-rich laggards. From Colombia to the Netherlands, countries are pushing ahead with real phaseout plans.

The Turkish Climate Network is calling on it to:
☝️Set an ambitious climate target and cut emissions now
☝️End new coal and advance a just transition away from coal

We're witnessing a wealth transfer from households to energy companies in Europe through a little known subsidy - capacity markets. It's up to the Commission and national governments to get a grip on these mechanisms that cost EUR11bn in 2024 alone.

EU clears €1.75 billion in compensation for early coal plant closures in eastern Germany
LEAG extended lignite plants in eastern Germany while profiting off coal. Now, the EU has approved €1.75bn to shut them down. How many times can fossil fuel companies profit from delaying the energy transition before doing what they should have done years ago?

Data centers are concentrated in these states. Here's what's happening to electricity prices
Residential utility bills rose 6% on average nationwide in August compared with the same period last year, according to the Energy Information Administration.
In the US, some states have seen electric bills climb 12-16% higher this year.
Why? Their high concentration of data centres and capacity-market costs.
Europe must regulate unchecked data centre growth and power them with new and additional renewables.

In June, Ireland 🇮🇪 became the 15th coal-free country in Europe, made possible by its remarkable progress on renewable power!
But, it’s leaning heavily on fossil gas to supply for Irish data centres’ insatiable electricity demand, which accounts for 88% of electricity demand growth since 2015.
