Today in Chemistry History graphic on Sir Norman Haworth, 19 March 1883-19 March 1950. Haworth discovered the molecular structure of vitamin C, and also created its first artificial synthesis. He also deduced the structures of a number of different sugars. Haworth projections are used to depict the cyclic forms of sugars. They are useful because they clearly show which groups are above and below the ring.
Sir Norman Haworth, who won a Nobel Prize for his work on structures of carbohydrates and vitamin C, was born #OTD in 1883 (and died on the same date in 1950): wp.me/s4aPLT-haworth

Do chemists die young?
Death notices for chemists suggest perhaps not, despite the hazards found in many labs
It is reasonable to assume that chemistry is among the riskiest professions from a long-term health perspective. But, surprisingly, RSC chemists live longer than the UK population by about five years.

Is basic science undervalued? David Glanzman (UCLA) talks about the decline of 'middle class' labs and that "there is no empirical evidence that the translational approach accomplishes this [cures] any better than the traditional one. Claims to the contrary at this point are mere propaganda."
