Checking our files today, and we're starting to already see our inaugural issue coming together.

BUT

We still have room! Maybe for *your* scholarship? We've actively processing new submissions, and we'd love to read yours

Send us your manuscript (4K or 8K words): mc.manuscriptcentral.com/gpcomm

In all of this? Authors can *always* reach out to us for any questions, comments, concerns, or clarifications about our processes. EiC @bowmanspartan.bsky.social is always available via our journal's primary email address: gpc@syr.edu.

We want to put the Peer in peer review, so reach out. =)

Securing reviews: When we send out editor-only R&Rs, this reduces the peer review pool. Many peer reviewers (at least, in our experience) are not confortable being invited to comment on revised manuscripts for which they weren't an original reviewer. It's not impossible, but it can be difficult.

27.07.2025 15:42 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Reducing stap judgements: Extending from above, when papers might have some of these "red flags" it very much works against the authors, as reviewers might already anchor their assessments of the overall work on some of these concerns. It could teeter a paper from R&R to rejection, quickly!

27.07.2025 15:42 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Avoiding delays: Over time, the editorial team will notice patterns that commonly result in rejection. This *very much* depends on the research (& we'll always articulate in the letter), but e.g. mediation analyses on cross-sectional data or missing positionality statements for interpretive work.

"What, you desk rejected my paper. Can' t I just revise and resubmit?"

This question comes up a lot. Via @bowmanspartan.bsky.social:

"We prefer desk reject over an editor-only revise and resubmit for three main reasons: avoiding delays, reducing snap judgements, and securing reviews."

How so?

So far, we've translated the GPC call for papers into nine different global languages, with many more on the way. =)

We'll release the documents once we've got them hosted, but thanks so much to our GPC board for hopping on board this project!

So anyways, please know that we absolutely want to hear from scholars across the Globe, because we want to elevate the best scholarship - @icahdq.bsky.social and beyond. We're working hard on outreach, but we're not exclusive to any particular group, method, people, or approach.

We're Yours. =)

One author already shared with us that in the initial peer review process, they'd been introduced to theorizing/logics that they were simply unfamiliar with - it's what happens when we realize how bound-in-place our thinking can be sometimes!

17.07.2025 15:10 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

For sure, our journal does not exclude - or intend to exclude - scholars from established areas from submitting.

At least for GPC, Global is a focus on how our journal engages and operates. We want reviewers and authors (and really, perspectives) from all over!

17.07.2025 15:10 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

We've also removed systematic barriers from the review process, such as:

* formatting - we'll accept initial papers in any format;
* grammar - our reviewers are strictly reminded to focus on arguments, lot language;
* observations - samples do not require "extra" justification

"So, how Global does my paper need to be?

We get this a lot, and the short answer is that "if it's from the Globe we call home, it's interesting to GPC."

Our focus on Global is less about a narrow view on work from specific regions but more a recognition that journals need truly Global engagement!

We would recommend *against* any overt persuasive attempts in the letter, however. It's less a "sales pitch" for your work and more ... an introduction to the scholarship.

Make sense? Reach out to @bowmanspartan.bsky.social if you'd like more.

"Does my submission need a cover letter?"

We would say yes. Cover letters help us better understand the history of your work (e.g., was it presented at a prior @icahdq.bsky.social or elsewhere?) and help us see where and why you see a good fit for our journal.

Our editor is a bit of a paradox: cutting-edge thoughts on open-access publishing and engaging the @icahdq.bsky.social community, but with a ride nearly as old as our field. =)

(okay, maybe not that old, but ... still)

Absolutely we do. =)

We're pleased to share our first Editorial Board! We're so very happy to work with so many voices, from so many places, all eager to ensure that we can curate and share the very best in human communication scholarship - and do so, open access: academic.oup.com/gpc/pages/ed....

We'll be considering more robust systems for sharing all of this content. For now however, we'd encourage authors to consider where and how they could archive content in other languages via supplements, and we're happy to facilitate the process.

Our editor, @bowmanspartan.bsky.social, has written a bit about where and how to make content more open and transparent, if you'd like to learn more: www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

We'd encourage Authors to consider sharing materials in *any languages* in their open access content.

24.06.2025 11:55 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

We recognize it's not a perfect solution, but the nice thing about an open-access journal is that the URLs for both the manuscript and any supplementals would all be freely and openly available.

"How are you handing papers in various languages?" It's a great question. While we are an English-language journal and thus, we do need submissions in English so that our reviewer team can access them, we're encouraging authors to make ample use of supplemental folders for other content!

The Three Caveats of GPC reviews:

For initial submissions, we do not request or require any specific formatting or style guideย - we do this because not all authors from all regions and disciplines use the same structures, and we don't want to unnecessarily burden authors for initial submissions. Thus, we ask that reviewers refrain from any comments or concerns about formatting, unless the comments specifically address one's ability to understand the manuscript itself. If a paper is accepted atย GPC, we will then work directly with Authors to format the work (using the latest APA guidelines and the Oxford in-house style guides), and we have paid staff that focus on production notes.ย
As a journal with an authentically global focus, we recognize that while English is aย lingua francaย of many academic spaces, there are many different Englishesย spoken around the world. As such, we ask reviewers to refrain from any comments about authors' grammar or syntax as we have no expectation about these elements on initial submissionย (again, unless it is an issue of comprehension). If a paper is accepted, again here we will work closely with authors on clarifications where needed (and again, we have a paid production team for these efforts).ย
We expect scholarship submitted toย GPCย to include observations made from anywhere and everywhere, as our colleagues come from all over the world. As such, we ask our reviewers to resist critiques asking authors to justify or contextualizeย the relevance of their observations simply because those observations come from smaller or localย communities. This is not to say that reviewers cannot interrogate sampling and selection, but we ask that those critiques be made within the context of understanding the claims made within the piece being reviewed.ย

Our first peer review requests are going out today! We'll continue to "massage" our language, but here's how we're codifying our "three caveats" for GPC reviewers - we don't enforce style guides, we don't police Englishes, and we don't ask for rote justification of samples. =)

A lot of our lost literacy narratives are built on enormous misunderstandings of what literacy has tended to look like over time, and the lost interpretive literacy narrative itself goes at least back to Plato and hits nearly every Thinkerโ„ข๏ธ from then to now.

(5) Still have questions? That's okay - we do also. We're shaping this together and it's quite a lift. Reach out to gpc@syr.edu or directly to Editor-in-Chief @bowmanspartan.bsky.social if you have questions. =)

(4) Generally speaking, editorial fit is "Would it find a home at @icahdq.bsky.social?" That said, we don't (currently) publish commentaries or opinion pieces. Rather, we do want to see a completed analysis or claim. It can be crit/qaul/quant/other, but it just needs to be a completed project.
