The CCAR is devastated by the terrorist attack on Heaton Park Congregation in Manchester yesterday, which left 2 dead and more injured. These were Jews intentionally targeted on Yom Kippur—the holiest day of the year, when we pray for forgiveness, peace, and for the blessing of another year of life.

These attacks threaten the most vulnerable among us and challenge our Reform Jewish values. We will not stop our fierce advocacy for the protection of our trans siblings who were made in God’s image.

Jewish tradition acknowledges and honors gender diversity as inherent in Creation. We have a holy obligation to nurture and nourish each sacred human being, in all our diverse expressions and experiences of gender.

Anti-trans legislation represents an existential threat to the health, lives, dignity, and well-being of transgender, nonbinary, and gender diverse people, including Reform rabbis, their families, and all of the communities we serve.

These decisions should be made by the person seeking treatment, their parents, and qualified medical professionals. The court has no place in the doctor’s office.

This isn't just a violation of basic rights. This decision legalizes discrimination and bigotry. That this occurred during Pride Month is even more reprehensible.

The CCAR is deeply distressed by the SCOTUS decision in US v. Skrmetti, which upheld a Tennessee law banning gender-affirming medical treatments, including puberty-blocking drugs and hormone therapies, for young people.

We hold so much hurt, and yet we still hope. For even in our darkest days, the Torah teaches us that we must cling to the promise of peace and that we must choose life.

May the maker of peace above make peace for us, all Israel, and all who dwell on Earth. Amen.

May this be a Shabbat of peace, and may tomorrow bring better news. May we come to know a day when war is a distant memory and peace is spread throughout the world.

And we cannot forget that over 50 innocent hostages are still held in Gaza. We pray for their swift return and for the healing of their families and communities.

We pray also for the safety of innocent Iranians.

At this precarious moment, we pray for all of our family, friends, and communities in Israel, and we send our love and an extra measure of חיזוק to our MARAM (Israeli Reform rabbis) colleagues who are carrying so much emotional and spiritual weight of ongoing war.

Reform rabbis renew our demand that Congress take up comprehensive immigration reform, securing America’s borders while according dignity to every person residing within them.

Reform rabbis call on President Trump to withdraw troops from the streets of Los Angeles and to work with state and local governments to restore calm and peace in one of America's great cities.

The CCAR commends its members in Los Angeles who have raised their voices against both the large-scale workplace immigration enforcement and the deployment of military forces to quell demonstrations. The CCAR pledges support to its members and the communities they serve at this time of crisis.

Torah commands, צדק צדק תרדף, “Justice, justice shall you pursue.” The repetition of the word צדק indicates that justice, the execution of law, must be carried out by just means. Deploying the military to quell protest is not a just method of enforcing immigration law.
