The economics of the second Trump administration As soon as he took office for the second time, Donald Trump made it clear that there would be dramatic changes in US government policy. This column describes how President Trump’s actions may have undermined his stated goal to “Make America Great Again” with low inflation and high rates of growth and employment. Instead, the policies seem more likely to deliver additional frustration and disappointment for most Americans.

"Under [Trump's] second administration, income and wealth gaps have only widened – and his policies are likely to further widen the gap."

AI to power national renewal as government announces billions of additional investment and new plans to boost UK businesses, jobs and innovation A major package of new reforms and investment will put AI at heart of government’s mission to drive growth, create jobs and spread prosperity across the country.

It’s an honor to be appointed an AI Ambassador for the UK. The UK is a great place to create and scale AI businesses, and I look forward to helping as much as I can. My focus will be on accelerating adoption while ensuring the benefits of AI are broadly shared.

We urgently need strong regulatory oversight of stablecoins. The GENIUS Act lacks fundamental provisions to preserve financial stability and would increase systemic risk stemming from stablecoin runs and inadequate guardrails on foreign issuers.

Co-director @simonhrjohnson.bsky.social argues that Trump’s tariffs don’t mean the end of globalization, but rather a remaking of it.

The flows of ideas, trade, finance, and people will be reorganized, with significant consequences for who wins and loses around the world — and who has good jobs.
