If your passion is video editing, it really will depend on your specific client and situation, but 70-80% of video editors I’d imagine are just better off asking for a higher flat rate if they want to earn more. Forgo the whole percentage avenue unless you see a chance to thread the needle.

The reality is, for most creators, the editor's impact on the bottom line is perceived as less than other roles. Not in importance, but simply how much it affects the overall algorithmic performance of each video. Asking for a permanent slice of the whole pie is a tough sell.

If you feel you must go the percentage route, the only model that makes logical sense is a percentage of the entire channel's revenue. It reflects your role in maintaining the channel's quality and consistency.. but it's a hard sell unless you're the one and only editor.

I've delivered my absolute best work on videos that completely tanked. The concept/idea just wasn't there. Basing my pay on that was a lesson in frustration.

The editor's role is to elevate, not to create the core value proposition.

The logic seems sound: if you contribute to making the video better, you should share in its success.

But after years of data analysis and personal exp, I realized the edit's impact on performance is secondary. A video lives or dies by its concept, title, and thumb before the edit even gets seen.

I've been a video editor for 10+ years, and a content manager for the last few. I live and breathe this content creation stuff. Having been paid many methods before, I thought it was important to share what I've experienced, and how it might affect you as a video editor.

Certainly you've heard "editors should fight for a percentage of each video's revenue". But I think after this past year, I no longer perceive that to be correct.
