Not surprisingly, most mainstream Jewish organizations endorse the illegal attack on Iran. I'm glad to see the J-Street and New Jewish Narrative, along with JVP do not join in supporting this attack on international law.

My heart is first with the innocent civilians yet again in harm's way: Israelis, Iranians, Palestinians, and far too many others across the region. 

The pain of watching places in Tel Aviv & beyond destroyed; people killed in a synagogue bomb shelter; school children in Iran. It's all unbearable.

Here are two truths:

1. The Iranian regime is repressive, dangerous, & a threat to the Iranian people, the Israeli people, & the entire region

2. There is zero indication the administration started this war with clear goals, plans, constitutionally-required authorization, or international support

The last 48 hours have been a reminder of how quickly we can fall into false binaries when it comes to the Middle East. Multiple things are true at the same time -- and we need to grapple with that complexity if we ever expect to find a better path forward.

Sen. Ossoff Statement on Iran Atlanta, Ga. - U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff today released the following statement. "Eight months ago, Donald Trump lied to the country when he claimed U.S. air strikes had 'obliterated' Iran's nuclear program. "Now Trump says he's taken America to war for regime change in Iran. "Trump has launched this regime change war and put American forces at risk without presenting evidence of an imminent threat, without clear objectives, without having exhausted diplomacy, without a plan for the aftermath, and without the consent of Congress. "I oppose yet another regime change war-of-choice in the Middle East. Congress must convene immediately and pass a War Powers Resolution to assert our Constitutional authority over war and peace. Ossoff’s statement is 1000x stronger than Schumer-Jeffries. This is a moderate Jewish Senator from a Trump state. The split isn’t moderate vs progressive, but leading vs poll-reacting

Seems highly likely that there is a huge split between American Jews and the groups that claim to represent us on this war, too.

I have not seen polling among American Jews about the Iran War, but American Jews in general are antiwar. Jews were the religious group most opposed to the Iraq War (See: news.gallup.com/poll/26677/a... and forward.com/news/1797/po...)

Notably, all the Jewish groups identified in this article that oppose the US war in Iran are explicitly progressive or center-left groups. All the groups that call themselves nonpartisan or centrist back the war. forward.com/fast-forward...

Americans have in fact pushed back against war and they often do so in terms that are about supporting troops from dying in needless wars.

The Trump administration has so little respect for the public, international law, and the UN that they didn’t even pretend to have a coherent reason for bombing Iran. They are just neocons who have wanted this for decades.

Representative Hakeem Jeffries, Democrat of New York, the House minority leader, said in a statement that Iran was a “bad actor” that must be “aggressively confronted” for its human rights violations and nuclear ambitions, among other things. But he condemned Mr. Tump for failing to seek congressional approval for the strikes. The Trump administration, he wrote, must explain its rationale and justification for the strikes, define the national security objective and “articulate a plan to avoid another costly, prolonged military quagmire in the Middle East.”

This is unacceptable from democratic leadership in Congress. They should be screaming NO WAR, not merely raising procedural objections. Cowardly, politically foolish failure to meet the moment.
