I am prepared to defend my controversial position that, actually, students do need to know when the Industrial Revolution was, that Saddam Hussein did not have WMDs, that the partition of India happened, and other things they regularly do not know in college.

This is the most toxic combination of right wing “You already know everything and college exists to validate it and credential you” and liberal “students are customers and the university exists to cater to them” shit on earth. It’s a big part of the reason higher Ed is so cooked.

More to the point, this culture of students showing up to college at 18 believing they know what courses they need to take is ludicrous in its face, yet here we are.
