I'm just annoyed that I feel like all the knowledge and the technology we have means we could all be having a really nice time and scientists could be doing science and everyone could have enough food and shelter and everything they need but instead *gestures at everything*

Mr Luxon is one of those very rare people whom its impossible to apply a theory of mind. Can you imagine his inner life in any form but its absence? The only books he reads are self-help. He cannot maintain an exchange of complex thoughts. Every interview descends into banalities within minutes

More than 180 authors quit writers' week. Many returned for a DIY replacement Constellations emerged from the ashes of Adelaide Writers' Week, which was cancelled after authors withdrew over censorship. Organisers share how it came together and lessons for the future.

We stood together against anti-Palestinian racism and they cancelled our festival. So we organised our own.

Very tired now, but very proud of Constellations!

Great in depth coverage from Hannah Story here

I'm really interested to hear what you have to say. I'm a econ newb, but I'm always keen to learn something new

I think you'll find that China tying Japan down for most of the war wasn't nothing and UK, Australia and NZ made important contributions, and Russia invading Manchuria helped Japanese resistance fold in the end, but yes, the US were a major part of the allied success in the Pacific.

This is it, precisely. The west doesn't like to admit it, but the numbers don't lie.

Over 90% of the German losses came on the eastern front, so no, I don't think the Americans "won" WWII

Ok well, then we just disagree. I definitely think they care about people suffering but that said, I agree with you that they're not very good at this (fixing anything)

I'm not claiming it's an acceptable political stance. While Ardern was fantastic at crisis management, she failed to make enduring change to inequality. That's why I'll never vote for this crop of Labour politicians - they're ineffectual

The project is now worse than it was originally and more expensive. Sound like the ferries. These guys are fucked in the head

I think labour care about those things, they're just too wed to the neoliberal world view to do anything about it. They're well meaning but too timid to make real change

06.03.2026 19:01 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

I think that's the core of it, really. Tech isn't inherently good or bad but mix in a bunch of people who think that profit is the only good and they'll turn anything to shit

06.03.2026 18:56 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

Ah yeah, if your focus is the silicon valley business model then I wholeheartedly agree. Those guys suck.
It's hard for me because I've spent a lot of my life thinking that tech was good, on average. But techbros have been a stain on the world. I certainly don't love tech as much these days

Ex-ACT staffer Grant McLachlan says party created fake grassroots groups Political pundits and media experts are warning that artificial grassroots organisations - nicknamed "astroturfs" - are being used to manipulate and mobilise public opinion for political gain.

β€œTPU did a lot of the groundwork for the party in the 2020 election with their Campaign for Affordable Housing to fight the Green Party's proposal for an asset tax.”

"So when they were saying 'This is a problem', it was actually a contrived problem that the ACT Party told them to create.” #nzpol

PM shaken by horror poll result, said to be considering options Political insiders have indicated to Stuff that the Prime Minister is shaken by today’s horror poll result and that he is taking some time to consider his options.

Is there any possible way back for a PM after this kind of headline?
I haven’t seen an embattled yet, but the knives are clearly out.
