I will never understand how this is allowed to happen. There has to be a way to address this in a real way from NIH's end?

I know this may be played out by now, but I wanted to start a post (and hopefully get some real ideas) about what non-PI options there are out there for trainees considering careers after their PhDs. Especially now in 2026, after the hurricane we called 2025. They are anguished. Thanks, Everyone!

πŸ§ͺIMPORTANT! This graphic explains how science all over the US is funded. Congress approved a 2% increase in the #NIH budget for FY 26.

Buried in the bill-
Shift of ~40% of grants to MYF. This will still result in a 35% DECREASE in the NUMBER of grants funded per yr.

Russel Vought is behind this.

#PILife is, defending basic research on a review panel all day long - and receiving a rejection notification for a big grant (different funder) on the same day.

Onwards. Always.

Is anyone else having incredible angst about whether or not their labs will continue to be able to do science? I submit-revise-resubmit grants and hope upon hope something with get funded so I can continue to have a lab, but I get waves of panic and sadness over the current state of things. πŸ˜’πŸ§¬πŸ”¬

Yes, I think this is true for the majority of people out there. I feel the "haves" and "have-nots" divide grows a lot with each quarter. It may just be my vantage point, but I've noticed the past couple of years that developmental biology is not being funded compared with applications based work.
