Elon Musk and a mass petition want a new UK election. Shall we do that – or just stick to democracy? | Marina Hyde I know many are aggrieved with Starmer and co, but scrapping a government for Elon and a Shropshire publican seems like a stretch, says Guardian columnist Marina Hyde

"Anyway, the resultant petition has.. been pushed by public figures ranging from Elon Musk to Michael Caine. Fine. The Jaws film where the shark genuinely follows the Brody family all the way to the Bahamas is no longer the stupidest thing Michael’s done."

How Britain squandered the best hand in the world Having had three friends in high places β€” the US, the EU and China β€” the UK contemplates life with none

"If it wasn’t plain before, recent years have brought home that Britain is an inescapably European country." Terrific column by Janan Ganesh on a disastrous decade for UK foreign policy:

It is an interesting point. If we supply multiple nations with weapons, including both sides of a dispute (as we do) are we potentially at war with all of those countries or regimes simultaneously if weapons are used? Or is it only relevant where it is Russian involved that it becomes a concern?

11.6 million people had winter fuel allowance. This 100,000 referenced should be exempted from the changes to avoid them falling into poverty, which should absolutely be avoided, but shift is one that should be considered a positive move in order to equalise the burden on taxpayers generally.

Government admits that 50,000 to 100,000 more pensioners will be in relative or absolute poverty as a result of means-testing the winter fuel payment and it knew that at the time of the decision bit.ly/48YogL2 It has taken nearly four months to admit it. Table below

I see that a collection of MPs have taken it upon themselves to β€œlaunch” a private prosecution, in relation to a case which is still awaiting a CPS charging decision.

What might be the problems with this? 🧡
