6 years ago, we predicted what Denisovans probably looked like. Since then, every new Denisovan specimen๐ - Harbin, Penghu, Xiahe - matched it beautifully.
โ๏ธ Xiahe: 4/4 features match the profile
โ๏ธ Penghu: 5/6
โ๏ธ and now: Harbin with 16/18!

Finally, we can put a face on a Denisovan.
My latest story is based on papers in @science.org and @cp-cell.bsky.social revealing Homo longi aka 'Dragon Man' was a Denisovan - or is it the other way around? Featuring @benceviola.bsky.social, @fridowelker.bsky.social and @chrisbstringer.bsky.social. www.nationalgeographic.com/history/arti...

Major expansion in the human niche preceded out of Africa dispersal - Nature
Analysis of species distribution models in a pan-African database comprising chronometrically dated archaeological sites over the past 120,000โyears shows major expansion in the human niche from 70โka...
1/5 Why do all non-Africans descended from a group that left Africa 50k ago? In @nature.com we model 120k years of human niche dynamics. From 70ka, a big expansion of the human niche in Africa likely equipped later OOA dispersals with a unique ecological flexibilty.

In scienceโs new era, open and transparent cooperation remains key
As China continues its scientific ascent, the rest of the world should keep engaging.
As China continues its scientific ascent, the rest of the world should keep engaging.
In what appears to be scienceโs new era decoupling would be a regressive step, we argue in this weekโs editorial

Figure 2 of the manuscript. Data availability in palaeoproteomics. A) Percentage of ZooMS and shotgun palaeoproteomics studies with available datasets. Preprints and papers that did not produce any data were excluded from this calculation. B) Number of palaeoproteomics datasets in online repositories (since 2010). ยดOtherยด repositories include Dryad, Figshare, Github, Mendeley Data, and the OSF Framework. The dataset was compiled by manually going through the list of publications compiled for Figure 1 and checking raw data availability. This figure was made in R v.4.4.2. with R Studio v.2024.12.0+ (R Core Team, 2023) using ggplot2 (Wickham, 2016).

Hello,
Our paper on enamel proteins from Paranthropus robustus has finally been peer reviewed, please have a read here: www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...
Paranthropus robustus has been puzzling scientists since its discovery in 1938 in South Africa, where a high number of fossils have been found.
