In terms of total tariff reduction, India cuts more overall from 110% to 50% (a fall of 60pp) for out-of-quota tariff. While the UK’s drop is smaller from 10% to 0% (a fall of 10pp). This enables UK exporters to get a 60pp edge over rivals without an equivalent FTA with India.

Not all FTAs are created equal ⚖️

In the UK–India deal, Britain cut tariffs on Indian cars to 0% from day one, while UK cars entering India face an in-quota tariff of 10%, with an out-of-quota tariff of 45 or 50%. But that’s not the only way of looking at it.
