Our colleague Timothy McKeon spoke with @cnn.com recently about the perils of AI for the translation industry.

“The more it learns, the more obsolete you become,” he said. “You’re essentially expected to dig your own professional grave.”

By doing our work as humans we are taking a personal stand and pushing back against this monoculture. But our stance also adds value to what we do. If you write, edit or translate with AI – even outside of professional contexts – you'll end up sounding the same as everyone else who uses it.

This corresponds with the what colleagues shared at the AVÜ meeting last weekend. Anecdotal evidence, but it is a silver lining at the end of the hype tunnel.

Good literary translation requires understanding (language, culture, genre--on both sides of the translation) and an ability to write well. "AI" can't do that. There are no shortcuts. Treat your work and foreign language readers with the respect they deserve. You won't fool anyone with this.
