Oh and before anyone asks... if I use tesla parts in an EV conversion, they're obviously going to be bought used.

A new module will... annoy me because the cooling in those 6.2 kWh modules is really ideal for blasting through fast charging or high-draw scenarios. I also really like the BMS options that Tesla modules open up. If anyone seeing this (will anyone see this?) has opinions, I'm open to suggestions.

So basically I'm at the point where:
- I need to go 3d scan this car to verify dimensions
- I need to figure out what sort of thermally conductive material I need
- I may need to suck it up and find another battery module

Notably... this stuff is thousands of dollars! And I can't even guarantee that this spec is required. To reiterate, at this point you are essentially redesigning and building your own module based on factory designs but in a shape you like... and probably very much suffering the consequences.

Image of insulated battery cells lined up around a cooling ribbon. This image is not true to how they appear in a battery module, as those would lack insulation and have adhesive electrically isolating them from the metal ribbon.

You also now have to find a replacement for the thermally conductive, electrically isolating glue being used to transfer heat from exposed cells to the cooling ribbons that run through the modules. The internet suggests adhesives like Dowsil TC-2035 that land in the 2-3 W/mK range for conductivity.

Alternatively, (sketchily), I figure you could "fold" a module in half. This carries... drawbacks:
- Need to safely extract cells with thermal adhesive removal
- Cells can't touch each other, they'll short
- Cells can't touch the coolant ribbon, they'll short
- Designing a whole new case/frame/etc

So... ideally you find another module or add more. If you add more, well... you need to fill in the dead space. The engine bay is already absolutely packed, I may be able to alter the configuration some to fit an extra module, but this actually is based in the assumption I mis-measured a bit.

Problems compound from here, too. Run the 11 module setup you see here, it would run at 242v nominal/275v peak/218v discharge limit. Tesla power conversion hardware (cheap/available/good) doesn't love running at voltages like this, and worse yet you're losing a heap of power on 400v-class motors.

For example, been agonizing over the particulars of EV swapping my untrusty, very-dusty subaru. Tesla's older 6.4 kWh battery module is the only one I love the cooling on... but it's only really ideally packaged for use in a big, flat battery pack. With the dimensions I have... fitment is tough.

I think for 2026 I want to commit to using this thing as a journal/diary/doccumentation on what goofy shit I'm doing moving forward. I have a couple projects slow-cooking that I might as well ramble somewhere about, right?

This is a fun simple composition with the winding river providing the visual path to a richly colored sky. The contrast between those rich saturated colors of the sky and the deep dark greens of the marsh create a lot of drama and impact.

Done. Let me know what you think?

Time to actually start using this account and migrating some art over. Here's one of a small series of Mundane Mechs from a little while back.
