Fun fact:
Only the queens survive winter. When spring returns, we start new colonies all on our own β from scratch! πΈ
So if you find me resting late in the season, please leave me there. Iβve chosen that spot with care.

Please donβt:
β Burn leaves or garden waste
β Over-clean your yard
β Disturb compost heaps β we often rest there!

Hereβs how you can help me survive:
β
Leave some leaf piles untouched in quiet corners
β
Keep old tree stumps or logs β they make great shelters
β
Avoid heavy raking or digging up the soil
β
Let parts of your garden stay βa little wildβ

ALL I NEEDED WAS ONE WINTER:
A single dry stem.
Three months of peace.
Then I wouldβve flown in May.
You saw garden waste.
I was a butterfly waiting for my wings. π¦π

WHAT SHOULD HAPPEN INSTEAD:
β Leave perennials standing until April
β Dry stems = winter hotels for life
β Let compost rest from October to March
β βMessinessβ = survival

THE TRAGIC IRONY:
You plant βbee-friendlyβ flowers in springβ
but kill the butterflies in autumn.

WHAT DIED INSIDE ME:
Not just me.
My wings that never flew.
The flowers I never pollinated.
The joy you never saw.

NOVEMBER = MONTH OF DEATH FOR US:
π You cut back all the perennials
π You discard the βdeadβ stems (we live inside them!)
π You turn the compost (weβre pupating there!)
π A βtidyβ garden = zero butterflies next year

WHAT YOU DIDNβT KNOW:
Butterfly chrysalises overwinter inside dry plant stems
Autumn gardening = generations wiped out
Every cut plant = a potential chrysalis destroyed
Compost piles = mass graves for overwintering insects

MY STORY:
I was a caterpillar in August.
Found the perfect dry stem in October.
Cocooned myself for the winter.
Dreamed of wings in spring.
Then you came with your pruning shears.

π¦ You thought you were cleaning up.
But you threw me away before I could fly. π
