Fact: Apart from pure recognition factor, one of the major reasons your fanart gets more eyes on it than your OCd is because people are perverts for narrative context, and your OCs don't have any. Corollary: you don't actually need to write a whole-ass graphic novel to achieve that narrative context. You do need to know what your OC's story is, but once you do, you can literally just draw contextless snapshots from that story that raise more questions than they answer and people will fill in the blanks.

If you can, I really recommend the book story too, on "Everything's Eventual" book.
It's a short story and while same situation, the book goes differently than the movie.
Personally, I found it way more chilling than the movie (thought I still like the movie adaptation), specially the phone part.
