I lecture about political science, social media and media & politics @ York University, I used to write a lot about music but I don’t so much anymore. I still watch too much tennis. He/him.

With that voice, can you really blame them?

Ah yes, using the « genius-level at everything intelligence » that hallucinates simple academic sources and gives useful tips to teens about how to self-harm to raise a newborn. What could possibly go wrong.

This clip is almost too perfect when you consider that Fallon’s humor is almost exactly what I would expect if I asked ChatGPT to write jokes.

Yeah, this sucks. I’m glad that they were able to have the big tribute at the Ryman before he passed, but this a huge, huge loss—and despite the health struggles, every clip I saw of the Mavericks from the past couple of years shows a band still firing on all cylinders.

As I already said, Malo had without a doubt the greatest voice I ever heard in person—and he and his bandmates did so much to broaden the meaning of country music and Americana both musically and aesthetically as the band evolved (their album covers are a fascinating journey).

A post from The Mavericks on Facebook: « It's with the deepest grief we share the passing of our friend, bandmate and brother Raul Malo on December 8th, 2025 at the age of 60.
Anyone with the pleasure of being in Raul's orbit knew that he was a force of human nature, with an infectious energy. Over a career of more than three decades entertaining millions around the globe, his towering creative contributions and unrivaled, generational talent created the kind of multicultural American music reaching far beyond America itself.
While his spirited performances garnered a massive & loyal following, and his powerful songwriting and musicianship earned multiple Grammy, ACM, and CMA awards, it was his lifelong commitment to the preservation of the multi-lingual American musical repertoire of which he was most proud, making history in 2020 with the first album ever to debut at the top of both the Latin Pop and Folk-Americana charts. It was this commitment, along with his steadfast championing of music education as an inspiration for every child across America and throughout the world, for which Raul was honored with the Americana Music Association's Lifetime Achievement Award, and the National Music Council of the United States' American Eagle Award.
Though his earthly body may have passed, Raul's spirit will live on forever in heaven, and here on earth through the music, joy, and light he brought forth. His contributions to American and Latin music will be everlasting, as his songs and voice touched fans and fellow artists around the world.
Raul is survived by his loving wife of 34 years, Betty; sons Dino, Victor, and Max, mother Norma, sister Carol, and Mavericks bandmates Paul Deakin, Eddie Perez, and Jerry Dale McFadden.
The family thanks everyone for their love & support, and asks for privacy at this time. »

Raul Malo had without a doubt the most extraordinary voice I ever heard in person, and the Mavericks are one of the great American bands of the last four decades.

Fuck cancer.

And just for the hell of it, here’s Sacha Distel singing a French version of « Beach Baby » released a year later called « Vite chérie vite » with lyrics that have nothing to do with the beach.

The cover of the self-titled debut LP by The First Class. They look like a bunch of studio dudes trying really hard to look chill and cool and failing badly. They look like a group made up entirely of studio bassists. And not the cool ones.

This is definitely about as cool as I would expect the British group of studio singers/musicians who recorded one of the very best Beach Boys soundalikes to look. youtu.be/oeGPpwFpIAA?...

Yeah, I grew up in Ottawa where the weather is roughly the same, and -30 was maybe the point where we’d start to consider maybe not going out (but that didn’t apply to recess or going to neighbourhood skating rinks)

No, he was a great hitter, but he also wasn’t hurt by having Bonds on base so often (as well as other guys who benefited from Bonds’s protection to get on). It was a domino effect that likely helped his RBI totals during his years in SF. He also mostly hit 3rd in 2002 (Bonds’s best year by WAR).

And part of the right/right/right situation obviously also involved George Martin, who was older enough at 36 to be the adult in the room, but not so old that he wouldn’t connect with them (he famously immediately got their sense of humor) or be willing to experiment musically.

« "We just didn't hit it off," Kent said. "We just didn't click. I' needed someone to push him in order to play better. I took the role of the guy who stuck the nail in his shoe every now and then to make him jump. I took pride in that." »

His *taking credit* for Bonds’s performance in SFO is hilarious too. Yes, the guy with 3 MVPs (should’ve been 4) before playing with Jeff Kent and 2 more after playing with Jeff Kent really needed Jeff Kent to light a fire under him, says Jeff Kent.

He’s a HOF asshole and that’s about it.

Among many other things, I still remember him complaining when he was kicked off Survivor that he wanted the million or « $600,000 once Obama takes his share ».

A tourist on Reddit asked if everything will still be open in Québec City when it’s -5 (Celsius) outside and I can’t remember the last time I laughed this hard.

Oh yeah, I completely agree about Selig. Inducting him is like promoting the teacher who gave first-graders candy but also giving detention to the kids for running around on a sugar high.

At this point I’m kind of agnostic on Bonds getting in (even though I’ll never see anyone hit like him in my lifetime), but inducting a guy who got to hit with someone on base every other at bat thanks to Bonds is pretty hypocritical.

And Kent’s case is based on exceptional traditional counting stats for a 2B, and those stats coincidentally didn’t become exceptional until his age 29 season. Coincidentally, that was the season he became the teammate of one Barry Bonds and he improved his career high in RBIs by 50 percent!

Inducting in the HOF the guy whose offensive numbers benefited the most from batting in the same lineup as Barry Bonds but keeping Bonds out is wild.
