Those figures include Nusra, Ahrar al-Sham, and HTS, and yes, even ISIS. It's not even close. So, please, either do the work to learn about Syria, or listen to Syrians and just leave us alone. Otherwise, you just sound like a Trumper trying to criticize AOC.

Many don't even realize they're disseminating Assadist – and often straight up Zionist – propaganda meant to position our toppled dictatorship as somehow better than whatever our future holds. We WANT to publicly criticize Sharaa, but we keep getting dragged back into the same fear-based falsehoods.

When Syrians push back against this disinfo, we are met with clutched pearls wondering why they're not allowed to criticize Sharaa at all. YOU ARE ALLOWED TO CRITICIZE SHARAA. That was the whole point of the revolution. But that's not carte blanche permission to repeat whatever nonsense you want.

Whether these uniformed critics believe Assad's allies' claims that he was good for Palestine, or nonsensical accusations against Sharaa, or (most infuriating) that our entire revolution was somehow "fake," it's all so incredibly unhelpful for both Syria and actual Palestinian liberation.

But since almost no one understands the complexity of Syria, almost no one is informed enough to engage in meaningful critique of its post-revolution landscape. Instead, Syrians are constantly inundated with meaningless kindergarten-level regurgitations trying to fit us into 2 arbitrary categories.

Syrians WANT to criticize Sharaa, but it should be GOOD criticism, just like pro-Palestine folks want to criticize AOC for her liberal Zionist stances. But in order to do that with nuance, we must first be informed about the US political spectrum. That's how any healthy critique of govt operates.

1. Assad ran a totalitarian police state that killed people for a Facebook post.
2. Most people weren't paying attention to Syria until it got back in the news again.
3. They don't understand how certain pro-Palestine media is vehemently Assadist and posts constantly in bad faith about Syria.

But what they don't realize is, not only are Syrians criticizing Sharaa constantly, that is the entire point of why he's better than Assad out of the gate. Because we CAN criticize him publicly at all. Syrians criticize him daily. But many, esp non-Syrians, have no idea how bad Assad was because:

Which brings us to Sharaa, formerly Jolani of HTS, the current interim president of Syria. The most common complaint I get when I speak out against the Iranian and Russian propaganda outlets who are both Assadist and pro-Palestine is that people feel they are not allowed to criticize Sharaa.

In both cases, the all-or-nothing mindset comes from 2 things: ignorance and fear. Ignorance is a lack of nuance, a broad swath approach to every issue, while fear leads to kneejerk suppression of critique bc it's seen as dissent from within "the movement" whose trying to defeat the percieved enemy.
