Very good points about the ripping yarns element & as you say they were also a gateway for a lot of poetry & literature (Frank Herbert, Tennyson, et al) - I’ll give that Saxon track a try!

One thing I'd add to this very nice tribute is that a lot of 80s British metal (particularly Iron Maiden) had a kind of "Boys Annual" sense of curiosity. Low on emotional nuance, perhaps, but plenty of ripping yarns and historical events.
