Statement: U.S. House of Representatives Passes Bill to Take Away Food, Health Care from Hundreds of Thousands of Virginians - The Commonwealth Institute
U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill to take away food and health care. The bill now heads to the U.S. Senate, which has an opportunity to rework the bill in its entirety.
"This disastrous bill would mean that hundreds of thousands of Virginians lose access to health care & food for their families...many more will see their health costs go up," said TCI's @ashckenneth.bsky.social
As it moves to the Senate and back, we urge people to contact their Congressmembers.

βVirginiaβs current minimum wage of $12.41 an hour is far below what even a single person needs in order to pay the bills in even the lowest cost county in the state. Governor Youngkin is dismissing an opportunity to protect Virginiaβs workers and ensure a more fair wage.β

When #VaLeg reconvenes on April 2, they should reject the governorβs harmful proposals and remain committed to welcoming communities and a high-quality public education for every student in every zip code.

#VaGov seems to be reviving his proposal to coerce local jails to enforce federal immigration detainers or face state $$ cuts. This harms immigrant families & would be costly for localities by making facilities hold people up to 2 days after theyβd otherwise be released.

Removing most of the proposed money to lift the arbitrary cap on state funding for support staff would harm Virginia students who deserve clean schools, working technology, and other support staff who can work with their families to address barriers.

While we wait for the Govβs proposed budget amendments to officially post, it sounds from his speech that some of them would harm Virginia families and students. Hereβs a look at a couple of themβ¦
