I wrote a paper on this for government in college. We have to get rid of Citizens United. Until then, term limits of 12 years would reduce the amount of corruption substantially. We also need to ban politicians from still trading in office. They must divest or put it in a trust while in office.

The Founders envisioned "citizen legislators" who would serve for a time and then return to their private lives and professions. Being a politician didnt pay well and required extensive travel which was difficult.
