Itch needed to have some tough internal conversations back in 2023 — when they saw the writing on the wall — and decide how to handle things. Given, you know, they did in fact take steps against certain NSFW creators at the time

itch is restricting a PG-13, SFW game because it has the tag "monster girls" in it. all that happens with this approach Itch is people stop tagging their shit, making the moderation task 100x harder

This is my genuine opinion on the direction Itch should take towards fixing their shit. They cannot be a quirky indie business and handle millions of dollars of money at the same time.

Professionalizing while retaining creator freedom and giving a better deal than the alternatives is possible.

Itch could have prevented this all by acknowledging the threat in 2023 and pivoting accordingly

They are catching up for lost time in a very painful way. Like filling a cavity vs doing a root canal without anesthetic

Habitually holding payments up should have been much more significant a criticism of Itch up to now, I think. Not being able to pay bills even if you make thousands of dollars on something you put up is pretty bad.

I don't think itch is doing any of this deliberately but also: I think people held very weird ideals about it until basically this month, while they've been banning queer erotic art for longer than that

Regardless of how well or poorly you think Itch handled the situation that Stripe shoved onto them, keep the pressure on the payment processors.

If you get completely fixated on Itch's missteps (and I think they made some real ones), then you're giving the actual source of the problem a free pass.

That's what I mean.... like yeah Itch isn't the main problem but it's clear that there are a lot of problems with the way things are managed on itch.

And problems like these can lead to the fucking death of something like it, something I REALLY don't fucking want.
