Traditional bonfire on August 1st, the Swiss National day, with Nancy for scale. Note that that there are no barriers and that can walk as close to the fire as you dare. Not something you would see in the US these days, I think.

Trying to understand how the steam engine of an early locomotive works at the York train museum. It took us a while but I think we gained a better understanding of practical thermodynamics.

While visiting friends near Sheffield, we stumbled upon Pemberley, aka Chatsworth house. Alas, Mr. Darcy was not in residence at the time. Nevertheless, It was worth seeing with our own eyes how vast such an estate is. You don't get a sense of that from the books or the movies.

In the context for my new aeronautics-related project, we are going to need some flight data to train our ML algorithms. And it needs to be acquired at a reasonable cost. So, we strapped a small GPS on a model plane and went flying. It seems to work nicely. Necessity is the mother of invention!

We released a large multi-view people-tracking dataset. We used 25 partially overlapping cameras placed over more than 400 meters. We acquired 24'000 images per camera, with full calibration data. scout.epfl.ch #VideoSurveillance #PeopleTracking #ComputerVision

In an upcoming MICCAI paper, we model the heart as interdependent SDFs representing a distinct anatomical component. By enforcing proper contact between adjacent ones, we ensure that they define anatomically and topologically correct structures. arxiv.org/abs/2307.08716

In a paper to appear at ICCV, we show how to count stacked objects such as those shown below, even though only those at the top are visible. Our key insight is that this suffices to estimate the number of objects per unit of volume. corentindumery.github.io/projects/sta...

To refresh our ideas before the conference, we went snorkeling in 3C amazingly clear water. With enough layers under our dry suits, we weren't cold. Putting one's head in the water is unpleasant initially but that passes quickly.

Supervised learning methods often assume that training and test data come from the same distribution. In a paper to appear in ICML, we show we can use idempotence to handle distribution shifts on-the-fly, without access to any additional labeled data. arxiv.org/pdf/2410.04201

My Russian PhD student is defending his thesis today and he put up some bilingual slides. That's cute and I view this as one of the best answers we can give to unsavory politicians. Let's attract the best and brightest Russians to the west and then let's keep them around.
