Stories like these are the reason why I have to tell people new to me that they can tap out of conversations at any time if I veer into anything horrifying or upsetting. My mom worked as an ICU nurse for 40 years. I worked in a rural vet clinic as a teen. We have seen things and have no filter

I’m not a squeamish person, but I have a reasonable respect/fear of nature coupled with a deep seated trauma from that ear thing in Wrath of Kahn and so in your place I likely would never sleep again.

The patient recovered! It was fine. Just…you know…a lot of “ow” first.

She wasn’t even trying to mess with me. My comment had just made her think of it.

It bit inside her ear. The woman brought in the bug in a bag to make sure it wasn’t a poisonous one, but my mom said she never saw anyone in “so much pain. She kept screaming.”

Never seen someone in so much pain. She’d been an ICU nurse for 20+ years at that point.

Then she said good night.

I stayed with my mom in Mississippi when I was moving to New Orleans and I told her once that I had a hard time sleeping because of all of the poisonous bitey things in the south. My mom, an veteran ICU nurse, proceeds to tell me about a time a patient came in with a centipede bite.

I had therapy today, and we have definitely talked about this particular thing before. 😂

I’ve said things like, “I feel like I didn’t do anything this year.” And had my friend say, “didn’t you write several books?”

I don’t know. That was the past. We only have now and the future. 😂

Oh, absolutely. Also for other people: celebrate small accomplishments! I will happily cheer you on.

Oh, for me? No, I will minimalize all accomplishments but also sometimes forget I even accomplished them.

And I know fully well that I can set a reasonable goal, and if I achieve that, set a new one, but no.

Are those goals set unnecessarily high? Also yes.

This is me and my reading goals. Oh, do I like to read? How can I make this an unnecessary challenge? 😂

I suspect it’s an ADHD thing, the way I juggle book projects, but again, I’m not diagnosed.

I don’t ever take breaks as I usually have overlapping projects. Financially I can’t do it any other way, but also as my friend says, “I don’t idle well.” I can take a day or two off, but unless I have a bunch of things to take the place of that work, I start mentally climbing the walls. 🤷‍♀️

Every single element of life is either more deadly, more expensive or more inconvenient (often all three) today than it’s been in decades & it’s purely because our robber baron overlords decided to dedicate the entirety of the US apparatus to doing barbaric & culturally suicidal white nationalism

No need to feel badly. I did go on a huge binge watch years ago to see if they ever explained why a writer was allowed to muck about in crime scenes. They did not. But all the men were after Jessica Fletcher.

I had to send an audio file of pronunciations for my next audiobook and in the most Lish move ever I mispronounced the word “pronounce.”
