We'd always assumed it was simply figurative. The leaf/fruit motif appears in quite a few Roman floors. Some at the Palace even!

That makes sense. He visited a while back and talked about meeting archaeologists in Chichester, but not having dug at the Palace (we assumed he'd have mentioned it if he had!).

Actually, we were approached by an elderly lady once, who recalled visiting the field as a little girl before the discovery, and collecting "little cubes of stone", which she would take to school and "swap for kisses". 🥰😚
