09.11.2024 04:39 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Emmett Watkins Jr. 7h . 6 A few thoughts. -Were gonna have to rely a lot more on our communities and immediate friends and family. As the national government vows to work against our interests, all we have left to lean on is each other. I guess now is the time to build/maintain those relationships, -I've already seen many democrats blame 3rd party voters, people who were way far left of the democratic party, and protest voters who sat out due to Gaza, It seems Trump won the popular vote, by enough of a margin that could never be filled by the votes not made for the two primary parties. With a promise to continue support of Israel's genocide, militantly defend our nation's border, and to instill Republicans in the Harris cabinet, they were courting Republicans from the start at the cost of any progressive support. This is clearly a mistake, and it's the Democratic party's fault primarily for that.
-America is an inherently evil country, and history has proven this. We've built our modern police forces on systems designed to catch runaway slaves and harass & kill newly freed ones, Our land was stolen from the indigenous peoples who were slaughtered by our county's founders, Adolf Hitler literally looked at our history of racism and cruelty to design Nazi Germany. And whenever progress is made, we kill the movement or create an opposing one to overwhelm it. Freed slaves, reconstruction to suppress thier power and ensure they'll always be second class citizens, Civil rights movement of the 60s? Here comes Regan and the War on Drugs and trickle down economics to cancel that out. Black president? We're gonna elect the most aborent human being imaginable, and we'll do it twice for good measure. So whenever we work towards anything that helps people in this country, understand that we are constantly working against the norm. This means we gotta fight harder, and often not even through means of government, to make a better world because this country is fundamentally opposed to creating one for anyone who isn't a white straight male, or anyone willing to yield to them. No one is coming to save us, especially not the US government.
-It's also important to say that, if you are marginalized in anyway, you must stick around, I've seen a lot of nihilistic, suicidal talk this morning. But understand that, if you're black, trans, queer, indigenous, Hispanic, or anything outside of the American ideal, your exsistance alone is an act of defiance. In a system designed to destroy you, you can defy that system by just continuing to live, especially if you can do good for fellow marginalized folk as well. Do not give up on living, you do still have people to lean on either online or in your local communities if you seek them out. We can get through this, we always have afterall. -As Project 2025 gets implemented, we should all take care to be more private online, especially on platforms like Twitter and here (including Threads and IG). Conservatives will gladly use your online profile to sniff out folks seeking gender affirming care or abortions, and probably other things I'm not considering now. So get your online communities set up independently from corporate sites like these so you can speak more openly. Even a lot of the things I'm saying in this post might get me flagged, this is my second account after the last was deleted afterall, You can all find me on Bluesky (Ejsponge61.bsky.social) and at my website (emmett.me) if anything pops off.
-I'm not sure how to solve the fact that someone this morally bankrupt won the popular vote, but this does crystallize something for me: it is no longer enough to just be a good person, and hasn't been for some time. American culture does not value kindness, understanding, or gentleness, only power and attention, If we are to improve this place at all, we must change this culture. We gotta make it cringe to hate, or even tolerate hate. Trump won because it became normal to support him, it never should have been, Establishment media is largely at fault, but us normal folk should work against that anyway we can, I know I'll be doing more in that regard. But to everyone, especially if you're white or a man, we have to be kind to ourselves and to others so that kindness can modivate political policies, -I've already been planning on it but I've accelerated it now, I'm getting a passport finally. Not that I can afford or even super want to ditch this place completely, but I think it'll give me a bit of perspective to exist in cultures outside of the one I've grown up in, Traveling requires money too, but I think it's something worth prioritizing after I hit my 30s in a month, Thats all I got right now. Take care of yourselves and each other.
I made a long FB post about what I'm feeling rn, inspired by a lot of what I'm seeing here and around the web. My dad talked to me about it when I got home and we and my mom had a really cathartic & long discussion about everything. Here's what I wrote if anyone wants to read it.

The instability and malliability of digital media and digital culture means that we need to document queer, trans, black, indigenous, asian, latinx, & disabled lives in ways that leave a record for those that come after us.
