Americans are addicted to cars, but in many ways it's a forced addiction. Decades of policy have made cars the dominant mode of travel at the expense of others, and marketing reinforces the car as the "best" choice. This isn't to excuse individual choices, but car dependency is a systemic issue.

I can't speak for the US but I find in the UK car users tend to overestimate how difficult it would be to replace many car journeys with active or public transport using existing provision, while also underestimating (& refusing to learn) how difficult it is for non-drivers to make certain journeys.

If YOU THINK PEDESTRIANS + CYCLISTS DON'T PARTICULARLY LIKE SHARING THE ROAD WITH DRIVERS, WAIT TIL YOU MEET OTHER DRIVERS.
DRIVERS ARE PROBABLY THE MOST ANTI-DRIVER PEOPLE OUT THERE.
Itβs brutal out there.

Oh dear. Oh dear, oh dear. And what have we here?
Such a distracted driver. Good job I was there to draw his attention to the fact that he was driving a motor vehicle on a road. I'll help him remember this by reporting this to the police so they can issue some "guidance".

A queue of traffic along a narrow residential street disappears into the distance.
The heavy traffic cannot sensibly negotiate the various traffic calming features which were put in to control traffic speeds and to try to discourage motorists from using the route as a rat run...it's not working!
Another day, another entirely unsuitable residential back street being used as a rat run...

This is an absolutely huge jump in oil prices.
It's also why Europe needs to get off fossil fuels asap (beyond climate change impact). We can't be beholden to this.

My thoughts are with British Iranians and their loved ones.
We need safe and legal routes for those seeking refuge, and a serious commitment to peace. Bombs will not deliver democracy. Diplomacy must lead the way.

A traffic violence story doesn't get more American than this.
A man whose wife was killed crossing the street advocated for a signal and was later killed at the same intersection himself.
Neighbors have been asking for a traffic signal there for 40(!) years.

Reform fury as someone else wins
by Our By-election Editor
Tim Shipsink
The losing candidate in the Gorton and Denton by-election, Matt Goodwhinge, has demanded an immediate re-run of the election on the grounds that he lost
comprehensively to someone else.
"It's totally unfair and rigged,"
said Goodwhinge.
"I shouldn't
be required to sit there and suck it up, just because I lost."
Mr Goodwhine continued, *I can't believe that all those voters I demonised failed to back me.
Especially after I was endorsed by Tommy Robinson and ten million Russian bots on X.
"We have clear evidence of family voting, where people voted in order for me to stop deporting their families."
Mr Badloser concluded. "I'm the victim of colour prejudice.
They didn't vote for me simply because I'm not green."
Reform leader
Mr Farage,
speaking from a sun lounger on a rock near the Chagos Islands said,
"It's a tragedy that the people of Manchester won't see Matt in Westminster, but my constituents don't see me in Clacton either."
