A screenshot of a Facebook post where a person named Andy ask the Well now “What the hell is transgender?”
The Royal Canadian Air Force account response with “That’s a pretty big question asked in a pretty small way, Andy.
‘Transgender’ putting describes someone whose gender – who they know themselves to be – doesn’t match the sex they were assigned at birth. It’s not new, and it’s certainly not a fad. People have lived this experience for as long as people have existed; we’re just finally talking about it openly.
You don’t have to fully understand it right away, most learning takes time, but we can always start from a place of respect. That’s how decent folks handle things they’re still getting used to.”
Massive shoutout out to whoever handles the Royal Canadian Air Force’s social media account. They responded to every single comment on their already very solid Trans Day of Remembrance post and they responded like this…

A photo of a tree at dusk, it is nearly monochromatic but there is a light tinge of orange in the background. The tree has no leaves and looks skeletal. There are a few birds on the branches but it otherwise looks lonely. Next to it at the right edge of the frame is an evergreen conifer stretching nearly to the top and around the same height as our skeletal tree. To the left edge of the frame, another evergreen that is shorter. Behind our tree are a couple other evergreens but there is a screen of fog masking them. The bottom third is nearly black in the thickness of branches.
Yosemite above the snow line a couple weeks ago near sunset. Also a bit of a mood.

A photograph of the night sky. The silhouette of a tree on the right, hill and bushes on the bottom. The sky is mostly dark blue but a significant amount of purple and magenta washes over the bottom right side of the sky (to the north).
Much more muted than what I'm seeing elsewhere, but I'm thrilled to see anything from as far south as the SFBA

I've never felt so Californian as having a kale salad last night that was so good that it led me to have another kale salad tonight.

The front of a large hardbound cookbook which reads
Start Here
Sohla El-Waylly
Foreword by Samin Nosrat
Instructions for Becoming a Better Cook
MORE THAN 200 RECIPES AND TECHNIQUES-FOR COOKING WITH CREATIVITY AND CONFIDENCE
The top of the cookbook with a ton of small red flags showing recipes of interest.
I got Sohla El-Waylly's new cookbook Start Here and have begun flagging recipes to try...I don't think I've ever flagged so much in one book. Can't wait!

A paper sign with a line-art illustration of two champagne glasses clinking, which reads:
Dear Mimosa Lovers,
Please know your limit and drink responsibly. A $50 special cleaning fee can be added to your bill when you vomit in open areas other than toilet bowls. All will go to our staff who has to clean.
Thanks for your cooperation and understanding.
Visiting a favorite brunch place in my old neighborhood and noticed this sign which is both horrifying and awesome.

LeadDev West Coast 2023 | Conference for Software Engineering Managers
Join is in Oakland, San Francisco for LeadDev West Coast - the conference dedicated to engineering leadership.
It's been a minute since I've attended a conference, but I'm so looking forward to #LeadDevWestCoast Oct 16-17 in Oakland!
Spending a couple of days listening, taking notes, and talking to other people interested in learning is one of the most invigorating things I can do.
Hope to see you there!

I feel like the definition of being at “high risk” from covid really needs to include “high probability of messing up your health and life for months or years” not just “likely to immediately kill you.”
A 9% chance that I’m gonna be sick for at least three months is a pretty high risk!

Hi! New to bsky and figuring out where my peeps are again. In the meantime, a re-intro: engineering at Etsy (usually international oriented), parent, occasional watercolorist, amateur most things (especially photography). My words are my own, may not reflect my employer's.
