The hidden history of Britain’s fight for queer rights Several new books explore the LGBTQ+ lives and narratives that have all too oftenΒ been ignored

For The Observer, I’ve written about growing up under the shadow of Section 28, bi erasure, and the role of the Bishopsgate Institute’s archive informing new books on LGBT+ history that offer resistance and lessons in our own increasingly intolerant times

This image from 1588 shows a tree with big bound books grewing instead of fruits. This tree starts in a house organ that is played from a well-dressed woman and a man. The image of part of. abook praising the art of making books, you may find it here if you fancy: http://diglib.hab.de/drucke/uh-20/start.htm

Back in 1588, everyone still knew that book trees grow better when there's music around, and when you speak to them. Attention and house organ music were the key.

Discworld QOTD, from Small Gods

β€œIt's hard to explain," said Brutha. "But I think it's got something to do with how people should behave... you should do things because they're right. Not because gods say so. They might say something different another time.”

Far beyond 'sex slaves' and 'sex trafficking' which are already demonstrably bad. But the sheer enormity of what the elites quite literally got away with is an evil that can barely be comprehended.

The systemic coverup for their evils and how they enabled that

It's something we need to reckon with

The UK is about to ban access to Wikipedia, just remember this bill was originally pitched as a means to protect kids from accessing porn.

"Friendship books" were the #Facebook of the 17th and 18th centuries (without the ads and data mining). Here's a fine example of one begun in 1795 by the aunt of the poet Felicia Dorothea Browne: https://publicdomainreview.org/collection/the-friendship-book-of-anne-wagner-1795-1834 #FriendshipDay

#Adolescence is extraordinary, in every way you can imagine. A tough, realistic, urgent masterclass of writing, acting, directing and social observation. And the kids ... I swear there are 4 future Oscar winners in this show. Brilliant.

My brother, the NHS and the inquest into a needless death My brother spent the last hours of his life trying in vain to get basic help from the NHS. Why?

β€œThe coroner also criticised NHS 111 for β€œmisleading” the public by calling its call handlers β€œhealth advisers”. This title, she said, β€œimplies professionalism which is untrue given their underlying skills and unsubstantiated given it is their role to complete an algorithm”.”

I never understood the practice, it's literally giving up your identity to indicate your new owner.

Recently heard a historian describe marriage (in the ancient world) as "marriage is a contract between a husband and a father." About sums it up.
