I was at Fort Apache when Tanya cut Lovesongs for Underdogs, /everyone/ sat in on that thing (Rich Gilbert, David Lovering, Stacy Jones). Heard "Pretty Deep" at least 500 times while Slade + Kolderie mixed it. Summer song.

Henley made the smarter choice renting out Petty's entire crew. LB was really without a paddle on that one. Very much his Zinc Alloy period.

Didn't everyone flip the Last Splash CD booklet over at the time? The tray art and spine were color-coded to the back-of-booklet image. The deluxe LSXX edition resolves the different impulses well, but the pastel Go-Go's shots are what I remember, not the admittedly iconic heart image. #cdfriday

Remixes of this and "Divine Hammer" were huge improvements. Last Splash was always a mess; "Mad Lucas" derails it, "Drivin' on 9" goes back to the Joe Harvard demos with Tanya D...if you drop those and "S.O.S," open with "Flipside," bury "New Year" at the back...could have been a really tight LP.

Showtime remains a masterpiece.

An enormously significant record in my teenage pursuit of new sounds. Unlike NE's crossover contemporaries, there is little connective tissue with rock: Showtime is both the definitive and final word on EBM. After the big singles, search "Rope" and "My Heart."
