Very late to the party, but Slay the Princess is a really interesting game. I very much enjoyed it. I especially liked how they gave the 'protagonist' a varied voice through their inner personality traits depending on what happened to him. Really brought life to it. Ironically.

My experience with making placeholder content, is you want it to look bad. You need to be able to spot it at a glance and go "that's way too shit to be finished" so you can ensure it's replaced properly. Placeholders that can masquerade as complete assets are sketchy.
