Today, we’re out running errands — market day, donating clothes that no longer fit, picking up some medicines at the pharmacy, buying more snacks for a good dog. And if there’s time, I want to take the momma to lunch in the old town.

To literally ground myself, I planted eight red and pink peony bushes. I also discovered green leaf buds on our plum tree. This garden is going to be bursting with life and color this summer. Take that, dread and doom!

For morale today, I planted okra and beefsteak tomatoes, green onions, lettuce, and eggplant. I’m also soaking a handful of blackeyed peas to plant tomorrow because buying them here is an expensive and difficult. Hopefully, we’ll have enough to dry and use all next winter.

Social media created this nonsense idea that not exposing yourself to hatred is isolationist. Choosing to not spend your free time with bigots isn’t living in a bubble. I don’t need to know what’s going on at X. I won’t be smarter or more knowledgeable or empathic by being there. Neither will you.

I saw a comment the said we aren’t “angry enough.” But all we are is angry. Our veins circulate it like acid. It cracks our sternums. It poisons and paralyzes us. We hiss and spit at each other, all impotent, helpless rage.

We don’t need more anger. We need more direction.

Just so you know, your posts are always a joy. Thank you for bringing connection to a fractured world. I see you and appreciate you.

I got some pink, some white, and some red. I think we’ll plant a variety so it’s a multitude of colors in our garden.

Today, my father would have celebrated his 94th birthday. Also today, this city is celebrating Carneval with brass bands and a parade which I can hear from my bedroom window. Mom and I are home, exhausted after a week of heavy yardwork, but tonight we’ll have some wine and toast his memory.
