Today, weβre out running errands β market day, donating clothes that no longer fit, picking up some medicines at the pharmacy, buying more snacks for a good dog. And if thereβs time, I want to take the momma to lunch in the old town.

you will be no help to yourself or others if your brain turns to liquid from witnessing one horror after another. it's ok to step away from the internet temporarily. it's okay to focus on small-scale community building and support irl.

To literally ground myself, I planted eight red and pink peony bushes. I also discovered green leaf buds on our plum tree. This garden is going to be bursting with life and color this summer. Take that, dread and doom!

Time for my doomscrolling to stop. Overwhelm is keeping me from doing things. I need to be writing, gardening, walking a doggo, cleaning, exercising, running errands, donating blood, making art, and doing positive things. Iβm taking a interwebs break to focus on what I can change for the better.

For morale today, I planted okra and beefsteak tomatoes, green onions, lettuce, and eggplant. Iβm also soaking a handful of blackeyed peas to plant tomorrow because buying them here is an expensive and difficult. Hopefully, weβll have enough to dry and use all next winter.

Fascists aren't doing one horrible thing to distract from another.
They are just doing lots of different horrible things because that's who they are.

Social media created this nonsense idea that not exposing yourself to hatred is isolationist. Choosing to not spend your free time with bigots isnβt living in a bubble. I donβt need to know whatβs going on at X. I wonβt be smarter or more knowledgeable or empathic by being there. Neither will you.

I saw a comment the said we arenβt βangry enough.β But all we are is angry. Our veins circulate it like acid. It cracks our sternums. It poisons and paralyzes us. We hiss and spit at each other, all impotent, helpless rage.
We donβt need more anger. We need more direction.

Today, my father would have celebrated his 94th birthday. Also today, this city is celebrating Carneval with brass bands and a parade which I can hear from my bedroom window. Mom and I are home, exhausted after a week of heavy yardwork, but tonight weβll have some wine and toast his memory.

Three yellow daffodils blooming amidst a grouping of green leaves. They are the first of many growing by our garden gate.
I know everything is on fire everywhere, so my moment of calm is to pause my panic and notice our daffodils are blooming.
