At first light Unix was the common denominator, and email was the primary application. For jokes we could type directly to the mail server to spoof sender addresses - no verification at first. SF-lovers was one of the first and biggest of the mailing lists. We also had file transfer, also insecure.

Your "seed idea" paragraph reminded me of the colonization of cyberspace. ARPAnet was started by universities, techies, and in the first expansion companies like mine, the RAND Corporation. Real security was not built in: we didn't need much of it to talk to each other. Then came everybody else.
