An e-swab is for culturing, which is not helpful here. The Orange swab is a PCR or NAAT test, that is both sensitive and specific to these two infections. The problem is, most providers order the right test, but the wrong swab is used, leading to lab error.

I love that my career has pivoted to helping people feel pretty (skincare, botox, filler, etc) and have safer sex (hiv prep, sti screening/treatment) 🤗

REMEMBER: all of the infections we screen for have treatments. Anyone who is sexually active is buying into participation with a risk of infection, it is your job to reduce YOUR risks. Condoms are a great option, and can even be used selectively.

If you are at a medical office that you notice may be using the wrong swab (or don’t offer one at all), it is your right as a patient to ensure the right swab is used (confirmed by the lab). The wrong swab with require retesting and may delay treatment. 👇🏻

If you have oral sex, you’d want to swab the throat with the same Aptima swab for gonorrhea/chlamydia.

Fun Fact: about 30% of gonorrhea of the penis came from an oral sex only encounter

Bonus Info!: a typical throat culture (used for thing like strep) DOES NOT test for GC/CT! 👇🏻

A common problem many patients have, myself included, is ensuring a comprehensive screening that includes swabs of ALL sites of sexual activity.

Anal sex, or use of fingers, toys, etc, since last test would require a swab for that area (self swabs are great!), commonly called an Aptima swab.

If you are having oral, anal, and/or vaginal sex, you should have a urine test. This is often times where average medical offices will stop.

FAQ: will my urine test be able to tell if I have gonorrhea of chlamydia elsewhere?

NO! 👇🏻

90% of Gonorrhea and Chlamydia infections DO NOT have symptoms. What does this mean for you? Without routine screening testing, you could be transmitting STIs to others, at increased HIV risk, and increased risk of STI related infections like epididymitis, prostitis, and reactive arthritis.

Anyone sexually active should have routine screening annually.

Anyone with multiple sex partners should have more regular testing, quarterly recommended.

Screening should include bloodwork for HIV, Hepatitis C, and Syphilis (RPR), as well as site specific testing for gonorrhea and chlamydia
